Description: Scarce first American, 2nd state edition in black marbled paper over red cloth quarter boards, gilt titled and ruled spine. Advertised for sale in Publisher's Weekly on April 2, 1887. This edition has some very slight differences from the 1st state edition, for example, the final page, page 457, has "And Mildred!" instead of "And Mildred?", a different font for "The End", and no signature number"20" at base. New York: D. Appleton & Company (1887), 457 pages + 8 pages of ads at rear. A Good copy with overall wear, scratching and darkening to binding, a bit shaken, cracked book block and brown pages at very center of novel.

There are 10 pages of ads in back. Red cloth spine lettered and ruled in gold; black marbled paper boards.
