Price: US$54.81 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: 1849 (Vol.I); 1850 (Vol. II + III); "Copyright Edition", published in the same year as the Bradbury & Evans edition. Collection of British Authors Vol. CLXXV, CLXXVI, CLXXVII; 3 volume set; 391, 384, 383 pages; blue half cloth with marbled boards and gilt lettering on spine. Very early English language edition (published in Germany), 15,5 x 11,5 cm. Complete Title: The Personal History, Adventures, Experience, and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger, of Blunderstone Rookery (which he never meant to be published on any account). Original paper wraps retained but pasted over by marbled endpapers when rebound. Boards have visible rub marks, rubbed through on corners, but gilt lettering and features on spine look nice. No foxing or blemishes or distracting yellowing but there are random pen and pencil marks throughout, small and discrete usually in the margins (see photos for typical examples) not very noticeable at first glance. All three volumes signed "Roger Perrineau, July 1942" on FFEP. Binding handles well but is compromised by cracks in front and back gutters of all 3 volumes.

Description: Early 20th century three quarters blue crushed morocco over marbled boards with gilt to spine. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Bookplates of Jeffrey Stern and Christopher Clark Geest to front pastedown. Original wrappers for parts IV and VII at front (laid in and bound in, respectively). Spine gently sunned and light rubbing to extremities. Generally clean internally with only a few spots of foxing to a handful of plates. A handsome copy of one of Dickens' best, and his most autobiographical novel. Early issue without the misprint: "screamed" for "screwed" on page 132 line 20 (often lacking from first edition copies); but with the other issue points, including: Chapter XXVII is on page 282 rather than page 283 as listed in the table of contents; 16: 1 and 225: 22 both read "recal" rather than "recall"; 19: 39 reads "cha pter ; ut"; 387: 45 reads "coroboration" rather than "corroboration"; 472: 37 has no closing of the quotation marks; and the first state of the engraved vignette title page (dated) is present. "David Copperfield has always been among Dickens' most popular novels and was his own 'favorite child.' The work is semi-autobiographical and although the title character differed from his creator in many ways, Dickens used him to relate early personal experiences that had meant much to him -- his work in a factory, his schooling, and his emergence from parliamentary reporting into successful novel writing" (Britannica). Like many of Dickens' novels, David Copperfield uses an individual, tracing his widening system of relationships as he moves through life, to explore the interconnectedness of humans, the way race, gender, and class can affect their paths, and the degree to which we have free-will. Near Fine.

(E. M. FORSTER'S COPY.) DICKENS, CHARLES. The Personal History of David Copperfield. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1850.

Price: US$12500.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Contemporary half red calf. Plates foxed as usual. Light wear. Very good. FIRST EDITION in book form with the vignetted engraved title page dated 1850. A superb association copy from the library of novelist E. M. Forster, author of A Room with a View, A Passage to India, Howards End, and others. Forster’s Aspects of the Novel (1927) discusses Dickens. E.M. Forster’s father died early in his youth and his childhood was dominated his mother, aunts and cousins. Among the most prominent was his paternal great-aunt Marianne Thornton, whose ₤8000 legacy was invaluable to Forster. Her niece Edith was the first owner of this book which was read by the young Forster cousins. The Forster family copy of David Copperfield became a part of E. M. Forster’s library where it remained until his death. Upon E.M. Forster’s death his library was divided between King’s College, his friends and a sale catalog by W. Heffer and Sons booksellers. The present volume was lot 88 in that catalog. “Of all Dickens’s novels, David Copperfield is the most enchanting. Few novelists have ever captured more poignantly the feeling of childhood, the brightness and magic and terror of the world as seen through the eyes of a child and colored by his dawning emotions.” The first of the author’s books to be written in the first person, David Copperfield is based on Dickens personal experience and “is thus of cardinal significance to the psychologist and biographer” (Edgar Johnson). In the preface Dickens declared David Copperfield to be his “favorite child”: “It will easily be believed that I am a fond parent to every child of my fancy, and that no one can ever love that family as dearly as I love them. But, like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favorite child. And his name is David Copperfield.” “Like Robinson Crusoe and Grimm’s Fairy Tales and the Waverly Novels, Pickwick and David Copperfield are not books, but stories communicated by word of mouth in those tender years when fact and fiction merge, and thus belong to the memories and myths of life, and not to its esthetic experiences” (Virginia Woolf). Provenance: the Forster family copy, with E. M. Forster’s bookplate and the early family inscription “Ella Forster from Edith Forster Christmas Day 1859.” Sold ca. 1970 as part of Forster’s library in W. Heffer & Sons, Catalogue 7 “E. M. Forster,” item 88.

Condition: Fine

Description: 1st edition. Original (publisher's) green cloth, variant stamping to the binding not recorded by Smith, and though variant often means later, this copy can't be later, as it has the 1850 date on both title pages (the key 1st issue point) and 19 of the 20 internal 1st state points listed by Smith, a percentage greater than many copies in the common binding that Smith does describe and picture. Endpapers toned, short tear to the half title mended, foxing to the margins of the plates (more so at the beginning and end) but the text is clean and let me be unmistakable about what this is. It's otherwise in fine condition, startlingly bright, unfaded, the covers unmarked, and never abused, and rare like this, and you will watch many birthdays pass by before you see another copy that looks like our copy, with an unfaded spine, and intact, unrepaired inner paper hinges, and get this: Copperfield in cloth is the most difficult Dickens novel to acquire in fine condition confirmed by Michael Sadleir who assembled the most comprehensive collection of Victorian novels in cloth, and from his experience he provided us with 2 lists of comparative scarcities for Dickens' novels in cloth, one of them ranking their scarcity regardless of condition and another ranking their scarcity in fine condition, and on that list of Dickens' novels in fine condition Davie Copperfield is ranked first over, even, the notoriously elusive 1st editions, fine in cloth, of Pickwick Papers and Great Expectations).

Price: US$28819.44 + shipping

Description: First edition. First state of vignette title page (dated). Publisher's primary binding of sage green cloth stamped in blind with ruled border and central arabesque to covers and lettered in gilt on the spine. A very good copy indeed with the spine slightly faded and dusty and a few trivial marks, but the cloth entirely without repair. Internally, generally very fresh with minor, superficial repair to the hinges, pronounced foxing to the frontispiece and engraved title, but the remainder of the plates, for the most part, notably clean. An exceptionally well preserved copy. Thirty nine full page steel engravings by H. K. Browne. David Copperfield, described by Dickens as "my favourite child", marks a step change in the author's career, a transition from composer of popular, picaresque, comedies to great novelist. It now ranks as one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. Sadleir listed it at the top of his list of comparative scarcities for Dickens in fine condition an we have found it consistently the most difficult of Dickens' major works to find in good unrepaired cloth. This is due in part to its shape and size. Like all of Dickens's octavo novels, the contents were simply too bulky for the flimsy binding. With Copperfield this issue was probably exacerbated by its popularity: the serialisation was an instant hit with the public and so when the completed novel was available it was read heavily or rebound for posterity.
