Milton, (John). Das Verlohrne Paradies. David Iversen, Altona, 1762.
Price: US$575.00 + shipping
Description: Two volumes in one, quarto, contemporary polished quarter sheep gilt, spine ends worn, joints cracking, contemporary floral patterned colored boards, usual light foxing and embrowning, large clean copies of both volumes. Translated by Friedrich Wilhelm Zacharia, this is the third version in German and only the second in verse. The first volume had appeared in 1760, probably in a rather small printing which was quickly exhausted, resulting in the second edition having to be printed in 1762 and then bound up with the first edition of volume 2, 1763. The frontispiece and twelve plates are in much better condition than usual; the designs are after Hayman and are engraved by Fritsch, who also engraved the frontispiece after the Faithorne portrait. Coleridge 160b and 160a. Uncommon.
