Dark Carnival is a short story collection by American writer Ray Bradbury, first published October 1947 by Arkham House. It was his debut book, and many of the stories were reprinted elsewhere. About the Author Ray Douglas Bradbury (August 22, 1920 - June 5, 2012) was an American fantasy, horror, science fiction, and mystery writer. Bradbury is credited with writing 27 novels and over 600 short stories. More than eight million copies of his works, published in over 36 languages, have been sold around the world. Predominantly known for writing the iconic dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 (1953), and his science-fiction and horror-story collections, The Martian Chronicles (1950), The Illustrated Man (1951), and I Sing the Body Electric (1969), Bradbury was one of the most celebrated 20th- and 21st-century American writers. While most of his best known work is in fantasy fiction, he also wrote in other genres, such as the coming-of-age novel Dandelion Wine (1957) and the fictionalized memoir Green Shadows, White Whale (1992). Bradbury also wrote and consulted on screenplays and television scripts. He wrote the screen play for John Huston's classic film adaptation of Moby Dick, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted sixty-five of his stories for television's The Ray Bradbury Theater, and won an Emmy for his teleplay of The Halloween Tree. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, among many honors.

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, first printing, one of 3,112 copies. Signed by Bradbury on front free endpaper: "Ray Bradbury [underlined] / Dec 1, 1982". Publisher's black boards, titles in gilt to spine; original dust jacket designed by George Barrows, wraparound image with masks and other floating objects, titles in red to front panel and spine. Near fine book with touch of smudging to boards, a tiny wrinkle to bottom left of front board, and light toning to gilt on spine; very good unclipped dust jacket with some wear to edges and spine ends, a couple of small chips to spine ends, light soiling to rear panel. Overall, an attractive copy. A collection of his macabre short stories, Dark Carnival is Ray Bradbury's first published book and includes "The Small Assassin," "Jack-in-the-Box," "The Scythe," "Uncle Einar," "The Traveler," and "The Jar," among others. Additionally, it includes "The Homecoming," which Truman Capote famously discovered in a pile of submissions while working as an editor for Mademoiselle. Interestingly, Bradbury originally intended to title Dark Carnival "The Child's Garden of Terrors," which emphasized the nightmarish qualities of the collected fiction. Notably, this collection's carnival and childhood themes are personally significant to Bradbury as they both played a large role in his becoming a writer. According to his official biographer, Sam Weller, Bradbury began writing it after visiting a travelling circus that came to his town, where he met the eccentric Mr. Electrico, who cryptically instructed the young Bradbury to "live forever!" Bradbury claimed that he began writing voraciously shortly after this significant experience at the travelling circus.

BRADBURY Ray. Dark Carnival. , 1947.

Price: US$6800.00 + shipping

Description: "BRADBURY, Ray. Dark Carnival. Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House, 1947. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $6800.First edition of Bradbury's important first book, signed by him on the title page. The legendary Bradbury was "as influenced by George Bernard Shaw and William Shakespeare as he was by Jules Verne Bradbury's poetically drawn and atmospheric fictions—horror, fantasy, shadowy American gothics—explored life's secret corners" (Los Angeles Times). The 27 stories collected in Dark Carnival mark Bradbury's departure from publishing in pulp magazines. Their "stylistic deftness stands at the head of a tradition in modern horror fiction" (Barron 4-24). "Evocative, poetic and suffused with youthful wonder, Bradbury's tales broke with pulp conventions in their style and approach to the fantastic Collected in his first book Dark Carnival they mesh to form a small-town landscape in which the magic possibilities of ordinary life and the banality of the fantastic are indistinguishable from one another" (Clute & Grant, 132). Because only 3112 copies were printed, "Dark Carnival was never widely available," and in 1955 Arkham House published The October Country, which is "substantially a reprint of Dark Carnival" (Horror 100 Best 55). With pictorial dust jacket designed by George Barrows. Currey, 55. Book fine, dust jacket extremely good with light rubbing, shallow chipping to spine ends. A near-fine copy."

Description: First Edition of the AuthorÕs First Book. Signed by the author, Ray Bradbury. The inscription reads (in upper case): "For Bob Hoffman, With fond remembrances of many pleasant evenings of Prokofieff, Gliere, Rozsa and others - and the old days of record making - With all my best from your friend, Ray Bradbury May 29, 1947.Ó The book is in near fine condition with the barest hint of edge wear, a trace of rubbing to the gilt stamping at the spine with all letters legible and present, and with faint dusting at page edges in a very good bright dust jacket some light soiling to rear panel, thin lines of foxing to the tops and folds of the flaps, and the usual light wear to the edges as this jacket was too large for the book, and some minor wear to the top and bottom edges of the spine. Enclosed in a custom black clamshell box. Presentation copies contemporary with publication and to personal friends are very rare. R.A. Hoffman was the "Art editor" and one of the founders of the magazine - ÔThe Acolyte'. He was a member of the Clifton's Cafe where the LASFAS group would gather (Ray Bradbury, Ray Harryhausen, Roy Squires, Robert Heinlein, and 'the other RAH as Rah liked to quip). Although not scarce signed, a true presentation copy [at the time of publication] is indeed scarce! William F. Nolan - author of ÔThe Bradbury CompanionÕ has noted that the book was released "October, 1947.Ó Perhaps to the general public it was; this copy is one of the earliest known inscriptions dated by the author, May 29, 1947" (the earliest known is the one Bradbury inscribed to his parents dated April 29, 1947) An attractive copy.
