Library treatment consists of library bookplate at front pastedown of each volume, and call number marked in pencil on obverse of each title page. No stamps or stickers. Vol. I: 367 pp.; Vol. II: 364 pp; Vol. III: 393 pp.; Vol. III: 367 pp. Text clean and unmarked except for library treatments as noted. Pages slightly toned, Vol. 4 with minor foxing at last few pages. Marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Red marbled paper over boars half-bound in brown leather, decorated with gilt borders, Spines with 5 raied bands, gilt decoratio, black compartments for titles and Volume numbers. All corners rubbed and worn to boards, spine tops and tail rubbed, edges rubbed. Hinges cracked, but holding, textblocks intact and firm, bindings overall good.

Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, a little rubbing, a very nice set. *First issued in 8 parts, in wrappers. Neither of the two Errata to which the slips applied, have been corrected. It is generally taken that sets bound from the parts are in this state, whereas in the later 4-volume issue, the book 5 Erratum has been corrected.

Yellow coated end papers, with several replaced with matching paper; corner repair to FFEP in volume I and three news articles tipped-in at rear. Armorial bookplate in each volume; small date stamp on rear pastedowns. Light wear at extremities, soiling to rear board of volume I. Internally clean and bright; overall, very good. Housed in four 19th century quarter-leather slipcases with cloth dust jackets.

Crown octavos, the books bound with the original blue-gray wrappers and ads in contemporary half black leather with red marbled paper-covered boards, spines in gilt, t.e.g. Without erratum in book three. Four of the front wrappers bear the signature of J. Dykes Campbell, the 19th century editor and critic. Foxing at endpapers, slight rubbing and nicking at spines, edges. This set is very good.
