Description: The rare large paper edition of this book, of which only 400 were printed, 17.7 x 22.5 cm. The book was originally written in 1823, with hand coloured woodcuts understood to be by R Stennet. Ruskin published this new edition with 4 extra verses added by him, Kate Greenaway supplying the additional woodcuts. The other 18 facsimile woodcuts were done by W H Hooper, and were left uncoloured, with (clever) children encouraged in the preface to colour them in themselves. This has been done in this copy to the frontispiece. Greenaway's plates are distinguishable by their gentler touch (see images for an example of the contrast). Pages are xi, 20,[3 blank, Handmade paper watermarked 1884, green cloth with gilt illustration, patterned endpapers, uncut edges. This copy has some mild signs of old damp to the covers, but internally it is in excellent condition, the page edges unopened where the verso is blank.
