James, Henry, Jr.. An International Episode / Harper's Half-Hour Series. Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York, 1879.

Price: US$105.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Early reprint. A small, hardbound (though publisher originally listed as "flexible cloth") 32mo in the Harper's "Half-Hour Series," grade it "very good" with a noticeable diagonal crease to bottom right corner of front board and FFE. Also some rub to head and heel of spine, but still tight enough to close its own boards and text block. Dated 1878 to copyright page; stamping in red ink to bottom of front board reads "copyright 1877, by Harper & Brothers," but there is NO date to title page, indicating this is NOT the first printing. (First printings are dated 1879 to title page; we offer one of those, separately.) Duplicated line to bottom of pg. 44 / top of pg. 45 (which is a first edition point) has been CORRECTED, here. (There was also a version in wraps, which is to say, "softcover.") 100 books in the series listed in the preliminary matter, including this title, which is No. 91. (True firsts list only 87 titles, here.) 99th title listed is "The Awakening," by Katharine S. Macquold; 100th title listed is "Ballads of Battle and Bravery," selected by W. Gordon McCabe. We have been unable to establish Harper's publication dates for either of these titles -- publication date for this volume may actually be as much as a few years later than the traditional 1879 publication date listed. Previous owner's name Frank N. Latimer written diagonally to FFE. The Frank N. and Fannie Allen Latimer House, an impressive brick Victorian built by pharmacist Frank and his second wife, the former Fannie Foster Allen, in 1885, is now the Inn at Ludington, Michigan. "An International Episode" can be seen as a companion piece to the similarly brief "Daisy Miller." It was published a few months after "Daisy Miller," in the December, 1878, and January, 1879, editions of Cornhill Magazine in England. Both stories develop James’ international theme — the collisions between the staid, cynical old world of Europe and the brash, often naive Americans. Condition: Very Good

Description: A small, hardbound 32mo in the Harper's "Half-Hour Series," grade it "very-good-plus" with some rub to corners and to the head and heel of spine, but still tight enough to close its own boards and text block. Dated 1878 to copyright page and 1879 to title page, while stamping in red ink to bottom of front board reads "copyright 1877, by Harper & Brothers." This is the first state of the hardcover, with the last line of pg. 44 duplicated to the top of pg. 45. (There was also a version in wraps, which is to say, "softcover," also 1879.) 87 books in the series listed in the preliminary matter, not including this title, which was actually No. 91. Tacked to the FFE is a small and well-preserved piece of newsprint offering a biography of the author and his family ("He is unmarried and lives at present in London," it says, while his brother William James is "one of the instructors in physiology in Harvard College.") "An International Episode" can be seen as a companion piece to the similarly brief "Daisy Miller." It was published a few months after "Daisy Miller," in the December, 1878, and January, 1879, editions of Cornhill Magazine in England. This copy with copyright date of 1877 at front wrapper, date of 1878 at copyright page, no date at title page and 120 titles for this series listed in ads. Twelvemo. The book aroused controversy when it first appeared, some reviewers taking it as a libel on American manners, but it later became one of the most popular of James's writings."
