The text is an amalgam of an abridgement of Catlin's "Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians" (1841) and his "North American Indian Portfolio" (1844). "McCracken notes that this edition, the first in German, was originally issued in eleven parts, with separate decorated paper covers, dated 1st eight parts, 1846; last three parts, 1847. Part eleven contains 24 hand colored plates" (Wagner-Camp). Howes C-243. Graff 630; McCracken 81; Sabin 11539; Wagner-Camp-Becker 84:13; Pilling 684. Continental editions of Catlin are quite scarce. Description: Translated into German by Dr. Heinrich Berghous. Imperial 8vo: x,[2],382pp, with 24 tissue-guarded hand-colored plates. Contemporary quarter calf, flat spine in five compartments, lettered and decorated in gilt, stamped in blind; marbled covers, edges and end papers. An excellent copy, binding tight and unmarred, moderate foxing (mostly marginal) to about half of text leaves but plates completely clean and richly colored.
