Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Description: A very handsome copy bound in finely woven dark blue cloth stamped lightly in gilt along the spine, most of which is quite dull. Very clean and tight throughout. With dark blue topstaining. In a complete, striking pictorial dust jacket featuring the piratical Morgan and his men on the front panel. With some light nicking to the top and bottom of the spine ends and a tiny "v" chip at the top center edge of the front panel. Darkening to the spine. A solid copy of this reprint of Steinbeck's first book. "This is the first novel that John Steinbeck wrote, and it will be rediscovered by his readers with delight. It is a wild tale based on the life of the king of freebooters, Sir Henry Morgan. We follow him from the black Welsh glens, his birthplace, to the gold and blue Sea of the Caribs. We see him become the overlord of the scum of the sea--the blustering Brotherhood of the Tortuga, the cut-throats of Goaves, Portutugese--as vicious a crew as ever was gathered aboard ship." It centers on Morgan's assault and sacking of Panama City, the "Cup of Gold, ' and the women fairer than the sun reputed to be found there.

John Steinbeck. Cup of Gold. Covici Friede, 1936.

Price: US$195.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: The second state of the first edition of Steinbeck's first novel. This copy is the first issue of this state, with maroon cloth binding, and with a facsimile dust jacket with the correct design for this issue, with a black rectangle on the spine. This edition is an interesting look into the world of publishing inthe 30s and the struggles of Steinbeck and his publishers to turn a profit. The original McBride edition sold poorly. After the success of Tortilla Flat, Covici Friede bought either the plates or the unsold sheets from McBride and reissued the book with a new tipped-in title page, a new introduction by Lewis Gannett, and its own binding. This is the earliest Covici issue of this book, evidenced by maroon cloth rather than blue, and by the presence of the McBride bell colophon on the last page. Slight spine lean. The cover is noticeably sunned on the spine, slight fading to blue topstain. Overall a very nice copy of this important part of Steinbeck's publishing history. Supplied with a facsimile of the original Covici dust jacket. The Covici jacket has a story of its own- the original press run misspelled Friede, so the jackets were sent back through the press to black out the misspelled name and reprint it with proper spelling.

Steinbeck, John. Cup of Gold. Covici Friede / Sun Dial Press, New York, 1936.

Price: US$200.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Very good in maroon cloth, with spine unfaded except at the very tips. Top edge blue stain faded. Goldstone and Payne call this the "first edition, second issue" but is more properly simply the second edition. This maroon cloth issue retains the McBride bell logo on the final page, which seemed to indicate these were first issue sheets reissued with a new title page and cover. Covici Friede, however, made up new sheets for this edition. This book comes with a later (1938) Sun Dial dust jacket, which is decidedly original to this book. Jacket has some chipping at spine head and rear corner, and also soiled on rear panel. Sun Dial apparently bought out remaining stock when Covici Friede went bankrupt in 1938, and then sold them with their own dust jackets. Sun Dial later went on to release other, later reprints of this book.

Condition: Very Good

Description: Second edition of Steinbeck's first novel. Originally published in 1929 by Robert M. McBride, the first edition sold quite poorly. But after the success of Tortilla Flat, Covici Friede issued another edition using photo-offset plates made from the McBride first edition and added a new introduction by Lewis Gannett and a new title page. This is the second issue, without the McBride logo on page 269 and "Of Mice and Men" to the dust jacket front panel. Housed in a custom slipcase. New York: Covici and Friede, [circa 1937]. Publisher's original blue cloth, front panel stamped in blind, gilt titles and decorations to spine; pp. viii, [2], 269. A very good copy in a very good dust jacket. Binding remains sturdy and square, light shelfwear and sunning to board extremities, a bit of discoloration to boards, gilt lettering on spine a touch faded. A couple thumb smudges internally, else quite clean. Jacket shows shelfwear and rubbing with a few small closed tears, protected in archival mylar. A presentable copy housed in a custom case.

Description: A splendid copy bound in finely woven dark blue cloth stamped in unsually bright gilt along the spine. Very clean and tight throughout. With dark blue topstaining. In an exceptionally bright, clean and complete, striking pictorial dust jacket featuring the piratical Morgan and his men on the front panel. A superb copy of the book in a near fine dust jacket of the Covici Friede second edition of Steinbeck's first novel.

Description: pp: [i-iv]v-viii [2]1-269. FIRST COVICI-FRIEDE EDITION. Published seven years after the first appearance. There were less than one thousand copies of this edition published. Blue cloth boards, design of ship in blind stamp, gilt title and decoration to spine. This edition has an introduction by Lewis Gannett and the publisher's name, which was misspelled, blacked out on the spine. Contrary to what is stated in Goldstone and Payne, this edition was not published from unbound sheets of the first edition. Phil Ralls, who investigated this point, shows that this is an entirely new edition. Moreover, Lawrence Clark Powell had already established this in 1937 in an article written in the 17th of April edition of 'Publisher's Weekly'. This copy has a previous owner's blind stamp on half-title and title pages, but is in near fine condition.

John Steinbeck. Cup of Gold. Covici Friede, 1936.

Price: US$800.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: The second issue of the first edition of Steinbeck's first novel. This is the first state of this issue, with maroon cloth binding , and in the first state dust jacket for this edition. To make things even more complicated, the printer misspelled Covici Friede on the spine of the new dust jackets. The jackets went back through the presses, the misspelled letters were covered with a black rectangle, and the correct spelling printed above it- see photos. The book is bright, tight, and clean. Minor shelfwear to lower corners. A small sunned strip at top of spine. Former owner's name and address marked out on the front free endpaper. Blue topstain still fairly bright. As nice a copy as I've seen. The dust jacket shows wear on edges and folds, expertly reinforced with archival paper tape. Corners clipped. With the blacked-out rectangle covering the misspelling of Covici.

Description: First Covici Friede Edition in First state dust jacket with no mention of "Of Mice and Men", with the original Covici Friede title blacked out and the $2.50 price intact on the front flap. A Near Fine book in a Very Good or better dust jacket. Also called the 2nd Edition of the book having originally been published by McBride in 1929; however, this edition reportedly includes sheets from that first edition so some call this 1st Edition, 2nd State; this is the author's first published novel. Inscribed and SIGNED by the author on the title page to a previous owner who also put his name and address discreetly underneath the front flap. This copy is in near fine condition with a square, tight binding, gold lettering over clean maroon boards, and clean white pages with only a hint of foxing throughout; the book does show some light rubbing and sunning to the top board edges and a mild gutter exposure to the first few pages, else fine. Housed in a clean and bright very good or better dust jacket that shows some moderate sunning to the spine, mild rubbing and chipping to the spine ends, edges, and corners, and a couple of short closed tears to the top of the front and back panels. Overall, a very handsome and presentable copy of the book, with a very clean and legible signature from Steinbeck, with the added provenance of the original signee's name written in. An important addition to the Steinbeck library or the 20th century literature collection. Not remaindered, not price clipped, not ex-library; in a protective Mylar cover and will ship in a sturdy box.
