Scribner "A" present. . Cross Creek has become a classic in modern American literature. For the millions of readers raised on The Yearling, here is the story of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's experiences in the remote Florida hamlet of Cross Creek, where she lived for thirteen years. From the daily labors of managing a seventy-two-acre orange grove to bouts with runaway pigs and a succession of unruly farmhands, Rawlings describes her life at the Creek with humor and spirit. Her tireless determination to overcome the challenges of her adopted home in the Florida backcountry, her deep-rooted love of the earth, and her genius for character and description result in a most delightful and heartwarming memoir. Additionally, was a 1983 film starring Mary Steenburgen as The Yearling author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. The film was directed by Martin Ritt. Ref: Bigelow; Hanna, A. First Edition, First Printing. with "A". REF: Bigelow. 46; Edwards, 166. The Classic Book on Southern Cooking, Cross Creek Cookery was compiled by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at the request of readers who wanted to recreate the luscious meals described in Cross Creek -- her famous memoir of life in a Florida hamlet. A great combination of recipes and stories about them. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings complied it shortly after writing a novel of the same name. Like many Southern cookbooks, most of the recipes in Cross Creek Cookery actually belong to Idella Parker, who was Rawlings maid for ten years. After hundreds of letters asking for recipes after readers loved her Cross Creek. Rawlings obliged, interweaving her instructions for Florida Backwoods Biscuits and Aunt Luella's Boiled Salad Dressing with nostalgic vignettes and insightful reflections on the many meanings of meals. Very Good in a Fair Dust Jacket.

Description: After the publication of Cross Creek Rawlings was urged to write a cookbook based on the references to food in the book. This delightful book was the result. It has been through many printings and edition but this a a first, with Scribners' A on copyright page. The book appears unread, with clean and crisp pages - no grease or gravy stains! DJ has same design as boards, with some chips along the top edge, spine is lightly sunned. It is price clipped. Throughout the book, Robert CAmp's charming drawings illustrate each chapter. ; Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings states in Cross Creek Cookery that all the recipes in the book were actually used at Cross Creek. If that's true, there was some mighty good eatin' going on there! Of special interest is Rawlings use of local ingredients - all sorts of seafood and fresh water fish, mayhaw jelly, datil peppers, oranges, grapes and plums, fresh vegetables. ; Drawings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 230 pages

Very Good in a Very Good Dust Jacket.

Condition: Very Good

Description: 8vo. Beautifully illustrated 1st Edition by the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Yearling. Fascinating and brilliant descriptions of Florida scenery, swamps, homesteads, orange groves and animal and reptiles of the region. Green cloth. Square tight binding. Clean interior, save for gift inscription in ink to front endpaper. Silver titling and emblem on spine and front board. Tight square binding. Minimal fading on spine and along board edges. Jacket shows mild wear to edges but otherwise is vividly colorful. After the publication of Cross Creek, Rawlings's life would take a dramatic turn. One of the people featured in the book, Zelma Cason, a census taker and friend, would file a lawsuit in 1943 charging that Cross Creek had invaded her "right to privacy." The case would drag on for five years, after being argued in front of the Florida Supreme Court, and would take a toll on Rawlings's time, energy, and creative work. Although the Florida high court on 9 August 1948 agreed that Cason's privacy had been invaded with the publication of the book, the justices gave Rawlings a Pyrrhic victory of sorts, fining her only one dollar plus court costs. In the aftermath of the trial, Rawlings wrote only a few more short stories and articles about Cross Creek, thus completing her cycle of Florida works. An "intimate, vivid and fascinating narrative" from the Pulitzer Prize Winner.

Description: Robert Camp. First Edition. Signed by Author. New York: Charles Scribner, 1942. First Edition. A fine copy in near fine Robert Camp illustrated dustwrapper that has been skillfully & artfully restored at the spine extremities.8vo.,230pp. Published in 1942 by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Cross Creek Cookery was a complimentary publication to her book Cross Creek, published in 1942. Florida painter Robert Camp provided various illustrations for Cross Creek Cookery. The same image that appears on the dust jacket was also printed on the linen cover of the original printing as seen in the photos. Various elements from The Actual CROSS CREEK are sketched throughout the cookbook amidst her well-sought after recipes such as Florida Backwoods Biscuits and Grandma Traphagen's Sugar Cookies. As per the words on the flap of the dustjacket ".THIS is not a cook book in the traditionalI manner, but it does contain over 250 recipes and some 30 menus for breakfast, luncheon, dinner, and camp dinners. It is,as the title suggests, a mouth-watering, evocative, and charmingly conversational discussion of cooking at Cross Creek. She has bound together her recipes by delightful little vignettes in the true Rawlings style. Grandma Traphagen's Sugar Cookies bring a nostalgic memory of the old time cooky jar in the farmhouse kitchen". A precious addition for any Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings collector.
