J. G. Ballard. Crash. Cape, London, 1973.

Price: US$1924.90 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: “‘Crash’ is, hands-down, the most repulsive book I’ve ever come across,’ wrote the reviewer at the New York Times when this cult literary classic was first published in 1973. Difficult to categorise, it is ostensibly about symphorophilia, or car-crash sexual fetishism, it’s characters getting turned on by staging and participating in real car-crashes. Few writers could be more relevant to the world today than the prescient J.G. Ballard, and this ‘psychopathic hymn’ is one of his greatest achievements. This is the first edition, published by Cape, London, in 1973, in Fine condition.

Ballard, J.G.. CRASH! – UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY, SIGNED. Jonathan Cape, Ltd, London, 1973.

Price: US$3750.00 + shipping

Description: First Impression. Octavo (19.5cm); original printed card wrappers; [6],7-224pp; signed by the author on the title page, with the publisher's slip bearing a synopsis, £2.75 price, and date of publication mounted to half-title page. Ballard's sixth and best-known novel, a postmodern dystopia centered around sexual fetishism involving car crashes. "After the narrator, named "Ballard," survives a serious automobile accident, he becomes fascinated and excited by car crashes, especially after he meets Vaughan, a fanatical "hoodlum scientist," whose ultimate ambition is to die with Elizabeth Taylor in a fiery car accident. Perhaps Ballard's darkest, most unsettling book. The identification between sex, automobiles and violent death are graphic, Ballard's tone is detached, almost clinical" (Barron, Horror Literature 4-16). Rare in the proof state, especially signed.

J. G. Ballard. Crash!. Jonathan Cape, 1973.

Price: US$4491.43 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: A unique uncorrected proof copy of Ballard s infamous work about car-crash sexual fetishism. Coming from the library of Martin Bax, founding editor of the poetry and arts magazine Ambit (1959-2023), to which Ballard sometimes contributed, this copy contains numerous intriguing edits to the text in Ballard s own hand. These changes do not appear in the published version, but rather seem as though the writer has gone back to his own work post-publication and revised various passages. A nice copy inscriptions aside, issued by Jonathan Cape in 1973, with a descriptive pastedown to the frontispiece that differs from the blurb found on the published version, as does the price, which went down from the £2.75 proposed here to £2.25 in the end. The published work also lost the exclamation point in the title.
