Condition: Very Good

Description: The Bodley Head. London. 1965. First edition. Hardback; grey cloth-bound boards, dust jacket. [c.150 pages.] 124 photographs in heliogravure. English. 360x280mm. 1.5kg. Very good, in very good dust jacket; slight shelf wear, no tears, price-clipped; small bump to base of spine, knock with slight creasing to upper forecorner, slight lean to spine. Sam Haskin's cult sixties photo book. Cowboy Kate has a photographic narrative in which eroticism meets the Wild West. In the main story Kate, a frequently-nude cow girl, is caught up in a Western plot that mirrors the movies of the genre, albeit with slightly more nudity. The book is now a classic and reflects the loosening of sexual mores and the freedom of the Swinging Sixties.   [Hasselblad. The Open Book. p.210-11; Bortolotti. Books of Nudes. p.196; Auer. 802 Photo Books. p.449] Beaux Books specialises in fine and rare books on art and culture in the 20th and 21st centuries. Prima edizione (First edition). . ''This book presents a phenomenon. She is the new London girl. She is Julie Christie, and Sandie Shaw, and In 1961, the high-brow publisher The Bodley Head seemed ahead of the game when it published Bill Brandt's Perspective of Nudes. In 1965, however, things had progressed so far that it was able to publish Cowboy Kate and Other Stories by South African photographer Sam Haskins, a wholly frivolous book that reflected the frivolous side of the decade. This was the first of many similar ''soft-porn'' books issued by ''respectable'' publishers, with titles like Six Nymphets, Birds of Britain, and Young London Permissive Paradise" (Parr e Badger, pp. 77, Vol. III).
