Description: 1936. Reprinted. 302 pages. No dust jacket. Blue cloth covered boards with gilt. Pages remain bright and clean with minimal tanning and foxing. Binding remains firm. A previous owner's name to front free endpaper. Some page corners folded. Boards have moderate shelf wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces heavily tanned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering to spine is dulled but remains brighter on front. Boards are slightly bowed.

Bound in blue cloth covered hard boards, gilt lettering to spine and upper board and author's device to lower corner of the front board in black. With the original dust jacket, unclipped (7/6 net). Book has spotting and browning within, boards are clean and bright, overall VG-; jacket is tanned to the spine and spotted to the rear panel and rear flap and grades Good Plus. This, the third issue of this book is what is usually found (the first two are very rare) having 19 non-dramatic works listed to the verso of the half-title page.

The front free endpaper has been reset, and has one small chip from lower fore-corner. This is the third state, with the half-title and leaf 5/6p. on stubs. This is a near-fine copy (spine very slightly faded, but less than usual for this fade-prone colour); there is no wear. This book was issued without a dust jacket.

Description: First English edition. 8vo. Original blue cloth, with dust jacket. London, William Heinemann. This edition published five weeks after the American edition. This copy is of the the third and usual issue (of four) - with a cancel half-title that lists nineteen non-dramatic works ending with Don Fernando, and with a cancel leaf for pages 5-6. Front free endpaper loose, otherwise a near-fine copy. This copy is inscribed and signed by Maugham on the title page - first by striking out his printed name and signing ?W. Somerset Maugham?, and then with ?For Eddie affectionately W.M.? The front pastedown bears the bookplate (by the french artist Marie Laurencin) of Edward Wassermann - a banker and Seligman banking heir who was a major party-giver of the Harlem renaissance (his name comes up in Van Vechten's book The Splendid Drunken Twenties). Maugham inscribed numerous books to him, quite personally. In a stout, functional leatherbound folding case.
