SANDBURG, Carl. Cornhuskers. Henry Holt and Company, New York, 1918.

Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Description: Small 8vo. Grey paper over boards with green lettering. x, 147pp, (2pp ads). Good plus. While tight and internally near fine, binding is rubbed and edgeworn (more so at spine head/tail). First edition of Sandburg's second major poetry collection, which earned him the first of his three Pulitzer Prizes. Second state, with page 3 not noted at bottom of page. Interestingly, this copy hails from the collection of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1970-81), and before him of his poetry-loving mother, Ellen Borden Stevenson -- on the front flyleaf, she boldly pencils "Ellen Borden -- / June 1925." She was a celebrated debutante and socialite (1907-72) who married future Illinois governor and two-time Democratic presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II in 1928; their divorce in 1949 while he held office raised eyebrows and likely harmed his presidential electability.
