Rebound in 19th Century half-leather library binding. Front hinge completely broken, with text block separated from front board. Cloth peeling and lifting from boards. Dampstains to endpapers. Lacking the frontispiece, both folding maps, and 5 of the plates. Some other plates with large tears and chips. Half-title paeg chipped, creased and torn. Front free endpaper missing. Text complete. Stanley's lively account, written whilst special correspondent for the New York Herald, of the British Expedition against the Ashantis in Africa under Sir Garnet Wolesley in 1874. It also details the British Campaign in Abyssinia. Lord Wolesley was struck by Stanley's courage and considered him 'amongst the bravest of my brave comrades'.
