Julia Child writes in her Introduction that she's never known a serious cook or chef who didn't say: 'Every day I learn something new!'" . First Printing of the First Edition. Oversize Hardcover. Includes Introduction; Acknowledgments; Appendix; Credits; A Note on the Type and Index. Illustrated with more than 80 full color photographs. "Julia Child introduces sixteen of America's great professional cooks and the dishes that they make in their own kitchens, and she edits their recipes for the home cook." - from the front jacket ".Julia Child writes in her Introduction that she's never known a serious cook or chef who didn't say: "Every day I learn something new!" "That point of view," she says, "turns home cooking and the pleasures of the table into a wonderful adventure." So, bon appetit, and enjoy the adventures that this wonderful book provides." - excerpt from the rear jacket flap "The recipes themselves are lessons in contemporary ingredients and combinations, making us aware of what is being cooked today and how food is presented by leading chefs around the country. In spite of their being given to us by professionals, the recipes here are all written expressly for the average serious home cook. The joyful passion that the chefs showed for their chosen profession was what especially impressed me during our television tapings. Every one of our cooks adores and is utterly dedicated to the art, and takes tremendous pride both in its execution and in its teaching. They have a good time, and it shows. Before we began, we said to each of them, 'We don't want show-off cooking like how to cut up a chicken in eleven seconds. We want real teaching. Consider your audience to be your apprentices, and really show us how you do things." - From Julia Child's Introduction

Condition: Fine

Description: Stated First Edition at copyright. Smooth pastel colored boards, fine. Heavy stock coated pages, fine. Bind fine; hinges intact. Dust wrapper, fine; unclipped 30.00, protected in new, clear sleeve. Very attractive. Large, unique 9.25" x 10.25" design. Title page partially clipped at center. Formerly signed and inscribed by Julia Child at title page: "To Arvin Riega, Julia Child". Julia Child's signature has been clipped; "To Arvin Riega," remains. A distinct shadow in a gold hue is present to the adjacent page w/the original full inscription including Child's. Rare, fine first edition in same wrapper w/a unique story. Julia Child introduces sixteen of America's great professional cooks, the dishes they prepare in their own kitchens, and she edits their recipes for the home cook. This handsomely designed book brings acclaimed chefs out of the restaurant and into their home kitchens with characteristic dishes and singular stylishness. As Child observes, though readers may not be equipped to mimic these achievements exactly, we can indeed "gather ideas" from the recipes and apply them as we're able with the aid and inspiration of eighty photographs. The lineup is brilliant, including Jacques Pepin, Alice Waters, Patrick Clark, Andre Soltner and twelve others; covers as much geographic as gastronomic ground, from Hawaii (one recipe by chef Amy Ferguson-Ota) to New Orleans. Reading soon becomes voyeurism, possibly even better than dining, particularly when one turns to a Provencal tapenade, courtesy of Chez Panisse's proprietor, or to Michel Richard's "Chocolate Dome" with raspberry sauce. Of course, coming from Child, the book is well and warmly written. About a pasta dish by Lida Bastianich, incorporating broccoli de rape, she comments, "This lovely dish shows what can happen to tough old greens if you treat them right." 148 pages. Printed and bound by R.R. Donnelley & Sons, Willard, Ohio, USA. Insured post. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
