Condition of the book is GOOD+ ; cover has a few pale spots, spine is quite sunned, edges a bit sunned, minor wear to corners and soine ends. Binding tight. Endpapers toned from clippings, text clean and unmarked. Additional material has some toning and notes. Poetry. RGR.

DJ has some wear to front corners, wear & light chipping to spine ends, 2 closed tear on lower front corner, 2 closed tear on upper rear panel, closed tear near upper front fold, some soiling on interior of dj. The date (1949) on the title page & the latest date (1949) on the verso, copyright page are the same, so I assume is a first thus, at least. The DJ is not price-clipped ($6.00) and has virtually no color fading. Included is a b & w photo of Frost as a frontispiece; also, contains an index of first lines and an index of titles. Quite a nice copy, would make a special gift.

Description: FIRST EDITION, 17/500 COPIES signed by the author (this copy also inscribed, see below), frontispiece photograph, a couple of dates noted in pencil against poems in the Contents, pp. xxi, 642, 8vo, original sage-green buckram, facsimile of the author's signature stamped in green to upper board, backstrip lettered in green and gilt (against a green ground), backstrip darkened with a few small specks to this and upper board, lightly handled, top edge green, good. Inscribed by the author at the head of the limitation-page: 'To Donald Putnam, for what he has done for us and all we expect him to do for himself, Robert Frost [&] Kathleen Morrison'. The nature of the gratitude, and the recipient, is obscure - we think he was a young poet and protégé of Frost.

Description: Thick octavo. First edition, one of 500 copies signed by Frost on a tipped-in leaf. This is copy number 3, which Frost has inscribed to his grandson, Prescott, and his wife Phyllis. This text served as the basis for the Limited Editions Club two-volume edition that appeared the following year, and it stood for many years as the definitive arrangement of Frost's works. Named for his great-grandfather, William Prescott Frost was the son of Frost's only son, Carol, whose suicide in 1940 affected the poet deeply enough that he "assumed considerable financial responsibility" for his grandson and his daughter-in-law (Thompson, Letters of RF, 517). Family association copies of Frost's books appear infrequently on the market. Spine toned and with a few light stains, stray mark on outer margin of title page; overall, a very good copy.
