Description: Hardcover. Full leather. Leather is darkened, dry, rough at the edges, cracked at the hinges. Uppercase numeral 'I' on the spine to indicate that this is volume 1. Both boards firmly attached. Early name on the front endpaper, "John Ely His Book by diversion 1 Mar 1764." On the inside front cover, another name (more recent) "Myrtle Alice Butterfield." 380 pages. Some fading and foxing to the pages, but they are appealingly antique, rather than approaching ruin. Dense prose on the life of a businessman - likely a difficult way to learn the profession - "The brewer hereupon sends him down two carts loaded with about twelve hogsheads or casks of melasses; which frighted the brickmaker almost out of his senses. The case was this; the brewers formerly mixed melasses with their ale, to sweeten it, and abate the quantity of malt, melasses being at that time much cheaper in proportion; and this they call Spanish, not being willing their customers should know it."
