The decision of a censorship case involving the seizure of nine books from Philadelphia booksellers, including: "The Wild Palms" by William Faulkner; " Studs Lonigan Trilogy" and "A World I Never Made" by James T. Farrell; "God's Little Acre" by Erskine Caldwell; and "Never Love a Stranger" by Harold Robbins. Publisher Alfred Knopf and his wife Blanche thought highly of Judge Bok's decision in the obscenity case and commissioned the Grabhorn Press to print 500 copies to distribute as a Christmas keepsake in 1949 "to give it this permanent and beautiful dress."

Description: The Grabhorn Press, 1949, privately printed for Blanche and Alfred Knopf as a Christmas present. 32 cm. Half buckram with paper covered boards. Paper spine label. Printed on laid paper, text in red borders with wide margins. Introduction by Blanche and Alfred Knopf. In open end slipcase. Covers of slipcase slightly cockled, otherwise mint condition.On March 20, 1948, members of the Vice Squad of the Philadelphia Police Department commenced a series of mass raids upon book stores and booksellers to seize a list of books that in Inspector's Ellis opinion were obscene. Nearly 1200 copies were confiscated such as Raintree County, Never Love a Stranger. Judge Bok reserved decision, and on march 18, 1949 sustained the demurrers and entered judgment in favor of the defendants. We have asked our friends the Grabhorns to give it this permanent and beautiful dress. (From the Introduction).
