Hundreds of illustrations by Cruikshank. 388pp text + publisher's catalogue for 1871 at rear. Some puckering to spine cloth and minor rubbing to extremities, but a clean and sound copy of a book more commonly found rebound or in pieces.

Description: In good condition. Lightly scuffed boards with rubbing to extremities. Partial fading to front board of 1844-47 volume. Corners rubbed slightly exposing board. Gilt finishing to spine bright and intact. Marbled end papers. Old hand ownership dated 1880 on front flyleaves. Marbled fore edges are toned, faded. Interiors in nice condition with light age-toning. Heavier foxing to primary leaves. All fold-outs in good working order. Tissue guards toned, but intact. Free of known markings. Bindings tight and intact. A sound set! Please see photos. A nicely bound set of this richly illustrated humorous almanac spanning nine years. George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience.

Description: 388p; [28]; 428p, [28]. Publishers decorated blue cloth with the original green linen dust jackets. A later reprint. An undated edition but presumable printed in 1871 Both volumes include an inserted catalogue of "Very Important New Books Special List for 1871" at the end. It includes a useful preliminary leaf outlining some of the history relating to the publishing of the original edition. Institutional stamp in the blind on the title page and shelf mark in pencil on the title page verso. Preliminary leaf reinforced at the inner margin with a minor tear, otherwise a fresh clean copy.

Description: Two volumes; 5 1/8 inches x 7 5/8 in. x 2 in. (thick); Volume 1: half-title; frontispiece; title-page with design; preliminary note by John Camden Hotten. 338 pp. Volume 2: notice; fold-out frontispiece; title-page with design. 428 pp. Reproduces the illustrations from the Comic Almanacks (1835-53), both as plates (several are fold-outs), and as in-text illustrations. Bound with dark green morocco leather spines, sides and corner-pieces, with a single rasised band on each spine, below the gilt-lettered titles; with inlaid leather designs on each spine: a figure in 18th century dress, holding a pair of boots, on volume one, and a figure holding a coach whip, on volume two, with green cloth over boards; sewn headbands, red silk bookmarker ribbons bound in each volume, top-edges gilt, light green marbled endpapers. The spines have faded to brown, slight wear to the leather surface on the outer hinges of the covers, with a scratch to the leather, running across the upper front side and corner-piece on the second volume; the page margins show some age-related tanning. Overall, condition is near fine. A bookseller, or former owner has identified the bindings as being: "Kelliegram Bindings", in penciled notes in the front of the volumes. No Kelliegram stamps are present, but they are in the Kelliegram style. Weight: 4 1/2 lbs. Postage is extra on this item.
