Third edition of this work on British birds eggs with descriptions of their nests and identdification. 532 pages over the two volumes in overall clean condition just some browning to first and last couple of pages in each volume, occasional small foxing spots and small marks. All 145 numbered coloured plates are present with a couple of extra plates with a star after the number. Bindings are sound but with a few small splits to endpapers at hinges, outer boards are worn on corners with small patches of boards showing through. Tops and bottoms of spines are more heavily worn with small losses and small split to top rear hige of volume one 1½ inches long. Description: xvi, 289, [1]; [iv], [1], 290*-532, 149 fine hand-col plates. . HB. 2 vols, 8vo, orig. cloth, spines faded with some wear. A few gathering starting. Half-title and final leaf in Vol. I browned. Later ink inscription to endpapers. A few plates with common names neatly added in pencil and occasional annotation to text. A good presentable set. Third edition, originally published in 38 parts between 1853 and 1856. Illustrated by fine hand-coloured, lithographic plates (numbered I-CXLV, XLV*, LI*, LIII*, XC*); also with additional leaves, 178*, 202*, 210*, 290*, 334*. This work was described by Mullens & Swann (1917) as, 'still a standard work and esteemed for the exactness of the figures'.Nissen IVB, 442; Mullens & Swann, p. 294.William Chapman Hewitson (1806-1878), was a land-surveyor, but on inheriting a large fortune, he left work and dedicated himself to the study of natural history, particularly Lepidoptera and birds' eggs. He published a number of important works, including Illustrations of Exotic Butterflies (1852-1877), and also became an accomplished illustrator.

Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the Linnean Society of London.Written by William C. Hewitson.The third edition of this work. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the boards and spines. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the head of the spines. Volume II lacks the spine label. Some loss of paper to the rear boards. Rear hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Front hinge of Volume II is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some odd spots and odd handling marks. The occasional pencil annotation to the plates. Very Good

Pebbled cloth over the boards. Marbled end leaves and edges. Heraldic book plate on front paste down of volume I. A little very light foxing and a few very light scuffs. A lovely set!
