Condition: Very Good
Description: London: The Hogarth Press and the Institute of Psycho-Analysis, 1924-1950 5 Vols, all 8vo., with the final volume, published 25 years after the others, in smaller format; dark green publisher's cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt; outer edges untrimmed; cloth marginally rubbed to extremities, but retaining its deep colour in all places; prelims and outer edges with scattered spotting; one faint dark mark to the lower corner of the text block present for some of the volumes; some offsetting and toning to the endleaves; occasional pencil markings within text; contemporary ownership name and date written in pencil to ffep of vol. II; other than a couple of minor finger marks and spots, very clean examples, especially so internally. First editions, first printings all. Authorised translations in English under the supervision of Joan Riviere. With the Hogarth Press at the time run by both Virginia and Leonard Woolf, the papers were intended to be published in four volumes, and indeed the preface to the fourth volume reads that 'the task is completed of presenting in English form practically all of Professor Freud's papers'. 'Practically' was perhaps the optimum word as the fifth, entitled simply 'Collected Papers' was published 25 years later, explaining the difference in size between this and the other volumes. The Austrian neurologist and father of psychoanalysis passed away in 1929. The collected papers are grouped together chronologically, and are intended to be read as such. They include The History of the Psycho-Analytic Movement, Clinical Papers and Papers on Technique, Case Histories, Papers on Meta-Psychology, and many others. Genuinely rare thus, especially so with the fifth volume.
