This copy is a 1st trade edition, 1st printing published by Willilam Morrow in 1985. ******************************************************** 'The Cider House Rules is filled with people to love and to feel for. . . . The characters in John Irving s novel break all the rules, and yet they remain noble and free-spirited.' The Houston Post **** First published in 1985, The Cider House Rules is set in rural Maine in the first half of the twentieth century. The novel tells the story of Dr. Wilbur Larch saint and obstetrician, founder and director of the orphanage in the town of St. Cloud s, ether addict and abortionist. This is also the story of Dr. Larch s favorite orphan, Homer Wells, who is never adopted. **** Praise for The Cider House Rules: **** '[Irving] is among the very best storytellers at work today. At the base of Irving s own moral concerns is a rare and lasting regard for human kindness.' The Philadelphia Inquirer **** 'Superb in scope and originality, a novel as good as one could hope to find from any author, anywhere, anytime. Engrossing, moving, thoroughly satisfying.' Joseph Heller **** 'An old-fashioned, big-hearted novel . . . with its epic yearning caught in the nineteenth century, somewhere between Trollope and Twain.' Boston Sunday Globe" ********************************************************* John Winslow Irving (born John Wallace Blunt Jr.; March 2, 1942) is an American-Canadian novelist, short story writer, and screenwriter. Condition: Very Good

Description: William Morrow, 1985, New York. Hard Cover. Book condition: Very Good. Dust jacket condition: Near Fine. Unstated edition, indeterminate printing due to the absence of any number line. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket. 9-1/2" tall, 560 numbered pages includes "Author's Notes". This Book Club edition book is in very decent condition: the exterior is square, very clean, free of edge dings with both upper corners lightly bumped and an unusual manufacturing issue--the top part of the spine does not adhere to the entire backing cloth (see photo), causing an unusual crease the entire length of the spine near the front gutter; it is more a cosmetic rather than a structural issue because the book is solid. Spine ends are undamaged though the head has about 2 mm of fading; hinges are strong. Except for an inked name/date/city on the back of the half title page, the interior is perfectly clean and completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and any sort of paper damage. Not remaindered or ex-library but definitely a Book Club edition. The dust jacket is very lightly soiled but is free of tears, scratches, scrapes, and fading; jacket is now protected by mylar jacket cover. One of my two most favorite John Irving novels--and the movie was also really superb!

Price: US$500.00 + shipping

Description: Inscribed first edition of John Irving's Maine epic, following a doctor who is an "ether addict and abortionist" (front flap), sympathetically touching on reproductive rights issues in the time before Roe v. Wade. Spanning five decades from the 1920s to the 1970s, THE CIDER HOUSE RULES is at once intimate and epic, encompassing difficult personal decisions and broad moral thinking. Published during ongoing bombings of abortion clinics in the 1980s, this title is deeply influenced by John Irving's own stance on reproductive rights: he has often fund-raised for the National Abortion Rights League. It was adapted into an Oscar-winning film in 1999. 9.5'' x 6''. Original brown cloth-backed boards with gilt design to front and gilt lettering to spine. Original unclipped ($18.95) color pictorial dust jacket, designed by Honi Werner. 560 pages. Inscribed by Irving to title page, "For Michael / Holman / with my best wishes." Jacket with mild edgewear. Book spine ends a touch bumped, a touch of foxing to top edge. Sharp.
