Description: KB17.Xvi, 17-486 pp. 452 numbered as 252, but otherwise complete. Many pages never separated. Tall octavo in original dark brown ribbed cloth with blind ruling and blind-stamped curlicue decorations. Gilt to spine and blind-stamped compartments. Corners and spine tips rubbed, top of spine chipped and a short separation at top joint. Robert Southey (1774 – 1843) was an English poet of the Romantic school, and Poet laureate from 1813 until his death. "The Chronicle of the Cid is the main web of the present volume. I have omitted such parts as relate to the general history of Spain but have no reference to Ruydiez, and I have incorporated with it whatever additional circumstances, either of fact or costume, are contained in the Cronica general or the Poema del Cid. Description: Orig. blind-stamped Victorian design to covers and spine. Title and authors name stamped with gold print on spine. The spine has some chipping to the top and bottom and at the outer hinge area although attached and strong/tight. There is also some very minor rubbing/edgewear to the covers. THE BINDING IS STILL STRONG AND THE INSIDE IS CLEAN, COMPLETE, AND TIGHT. Light pink endpapers with private owner library label inside front cover pastedown. Book states FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Pagnation is as follows I-VIII includes Table of Contents, IX - XVI is preface, 17-43 Introduction, 44 blank, 45 - 384 actual text of The Chronicle of The Cid in eleven books, 385 - 452 are the NOTES (page 452 is misnumbered 252), 453- 486 (ALL COMPLETE) appendix of translated extracts from the Poema del Cid, each preceded by an argument, then a literal translation, and finally the original 16th century text., eps and paste-downs nice and all intact. Probably the most famous work in Spanish literature, here made accessible to the English reader in a style that is clear and easy to follow. PROTECTED IN MYLAR JACKET.

First American edition, stated, of this 19th-century translation of the major Spanish sources for the life of El Cid, including Chronica del famoso cavallero Cid Ruydiez Campeador, 1593, Las quatro partes enteras de la Cronica de Espana, and the Romances del Cid. The heroic deeds and songs attributed to Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar were composed little more than fifty years after his death, and recount his his deeds as nobleman, military leader, and diplomat before and after his service for King Alfonso VI.

Antique ex-library with plates from the Sturgis Library (Barnstable, MA), hand-numbered and hand-dated, and Boston Public library inside front board. xvi, 486 pp. Includes very useful preface that includes information on the original writings translated in this work (translation came from three different works): Chronica del Famoso Cavellero Cid Ruyiez Campeador, Burgos 1593, the Poema del Cid, and the Romances del Cid. There is also a 43-page introduction. Very good.
