"In December of 1932, W. Somerset Maugham went to Paris to attend the trial of Guy Albert Davin, who had been sentenced to life for murdering his rich American friend Richard Wall. The crime had homosexual overtones, but Maugham was more interested in the character of the murderer and the French penal system. From the trial and subsequent visit to French Guiana he fashioned his 1939 novel, Christmas Holiday. The story was not for the prudish, and has never been one of the author's best-known works. But it epitomizes his love - and concern - for the morbid details found in ordinary lives and remote locales" (The Dark Page, Vol.1, p.194). Basis for Robert Siodmak's 1944 film noir of the same name, starring Deanna Durbin, Gene Kelly, and Richard Wharf. STOTT A54a. See: Morgan, Ted. Maugham: A Biography (1980).

Maugham, W. Somerset. Christmas Holiday. William Heinemann Ltd., London, 1939.

Price: US$600.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Very good minus, first English edition, no dust jacket. Signed by the author on the title page. The issue date of 1939 is written in pencil on the title page. Blue cloth covered boards with gilt lettering and author's logo black-stamped on front panel; gilt lettering and black-stamped publisher's name on spine; publisher's logo black-stamped on back panel. Board panels are scuffed in general; front panel has a shallow roughly 3" diagonal crease across the lower right corner. Spine is sunned; small stain at upper right front corner at head of spine. Upper edge at head of spine is rubbed, and with a 1/4" closed vertical tear in the center; corners are fraying. Small shallow bump along upper edge of front panel, close to spine. Lower edge at tail of spine is also rubbed and with several rub-throughs at tips of small vertical creases, corners are fraying. Fore-edge corner tips have small rub-throughs. Lower board edges of both panels are scuffed but holding. External page edges are age-soiled and darkened. Blue paper end papers have foxing or possibly shadow-transfers around edges. Previous owner's bookplate on front paste down; same owner inscribed the book to someone else in the center of the FFEP; there is a circular damp-stain below that. Text pages are of poor quality causing them to darken more than the typical age-toning. Some internal foxing, more so toward the front and back. Book is minimally shaken but text block is sound overall. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition description. Additional photos available at your request. International sales to all countries other than the UK will require use of an alternative shipping company which will result in higher shipping expense. A signature upon receipt may also be required.
