Unlike his fellow Ohioan Dard Hunter, the author did not build his reputation as a paper maker but as a botanical expert on the subject. The paper samples presented here were collected by him in China.Condition of this book:Boards rubbed at lower fore corners but overall fine. Special Limited Edition, first issue in this format. The text was composed in Van Dijck types by Mackenzie-Harris Corp. and was printed on mouldmade Hahnemuhle paper. The Chinese designs have been taken from W. M. Hawley's Chinese Folk Designs and the book was bound by Gray Parrot, Inc. This is copy number 123." 8 inches x 10 1/2 inches; half-title; title-page with design printed in red; contents; preface; 77 pp., with forty paper samples described (with 40 actual mounted samples, some are colored papers, or with Chinese printing on them); bibliography + numbered colophon page. Illustrated with reproductions of historical black & white photographs, in-text designs, diagrams, map, two woodcut type illustrations printed on a thinner paper; a folded, broadside of a reproduction of the South China Morning Post April 12, 1932, inserted in the back of the book. Laid-in is a facsimile of a 1932 South China Morning Post as an example of the old Hong Kong newspapers McClure used to his parcels of paper. A fine copy. This copy unnumbered and marked "H. M.
