DICKENS, CHARLES. PICTURES FROM ITALY. Bradbury & Evans, London, 1846.

Price: US$120.25 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: pp: [viii][1]2-269 [3]. Original blue cloth boards with blind stamp decoration, two pages of adverts, pictorial title page. In 1844, Dickens took a respite from writing novels and for several months travelled through France and Italy with his family. About one-third of the book first appeared in the 'Daily News' from January to March, 1946. These were edited (some additions, some deletions) for the book. In the book, Dickens wrote of his encounters with Italy's colourful street life. He was a bit daring, travelling to the summit of Mt. Vesuvius on an icy night. And this writing captures the imagination. Dickens is particularly drawn to the costumes, cross-dressing, and sheer exuberance of the Roman carnival. This is a very good copy with moderate edge wear to the boards and soiling to the edge.

Description: London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846. 2 pp undated ads. Original blind-stamped blue cloth. First Edition of Dickens's account of his 1844 tour of Italy. His description of the coaching trips which took him from place to place for five months is full of wonderful observations of his fellow-men. His account of a public execution in Rome is remarkable -- his emotional reaction is held firmly in control but revulsion at the whole proceeding is implicit in every line [CGEL] This copy is in the primary (fine-diaper cloth) binding; copies were also issued in ribbed cloth of the same color. This is a very good copy, with little wear but with some soil on the covers; the endpapers are old but not original. The front flyleaf bears the penciled signature of Walter E. Smith, bibliographer of Dickens. Smith II pp 44-58.

Dickens, Charles. THE BATTLE OF LIFE. A Love Story. , 1846.

Price: US$495.00 + shipping

Description: London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt, all page edges gilt. First Edition of the fourth of Dickens's five illustrated Christmas books -- following A CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE CHIMES, and THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH, and preceding THE HAUNTED MAN. This is an unusual tale in which two sisters love the same man, both ultimately settling in with him (though only one is married to him) -- according to Thackeray "a wretched affair." It is in fact quite autobiographical: Dickens loved Mary Hogarth, married her sister Catherine, and then was happy to have his household run by their sister Georgina. This copy has the vignette title page in the fourth and usual state (Todd's state E1), with an angel holding the banner and with no publisher's imprint. In our experience, at least 90% and perhaps 95% of the copies encountered are of this state. This is a bright copy, perhaps near-fine, with the usual minor wear at the spine ends; atypically, the original delicate endpapers are not cracked. Smith II pp 60-65; Podeschi (Yale) A116.

"Dickens turned in Oliver Twist to the novel of crime and terror Some characters are drawn with humorous realism, but for the most part humor is dimmed by gloomy memories of the author’s own neglected childhood and sensational scenes are shrouded in an atmosphere genuinely eerie and sinister That Dickens shared with his contemporaries the conviction that the novel should be an instrument of social reform is evident in Oliver Twist" (Baugh).

Dickens, Charles. A Christmas Carol. The Cricket on the Hearth. The Battle of Life. Bradbury & Evans. London. 1846, 1846.

Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Condition: Poor

Description: A Christmas Carol. The Cricket on the Hearth. The Battle of Life; A Love Story. Bound together in a single volume. A Christmas Carol. 166 pages. Lacking title page - The first page present is the colored plate 'Scrooge's Third Visitor.' Followed by the preface, table of contents, and then the first page of the tale. 166 pages. The original ads from the end, if there were any, are gone. Contains 3 hand-colored plates by Leech and 4 black and white illustrations in the text. The plates are, Scrooge s third Visitor, Marley s Ghost, and The Last of the Spirits. Binding is broken. Pages 1-18 are detached from the text block (but attached to each other). Page 19-30 make up another disbound group. Page 31-32 is detached. Pages 33-48 are another disbound signature. All the rest is attached to the large textblock that contains the rest of this story and all of the other two. Without a title page or the advertisements, it is hard to determine exactly which printing this is. The publisher s name, Bradbury and Evans, is printed at the bottom of the final page. Chapman & Hall printed the first printings of the book, so the Bradbury & Evans slug suggests that this is printed after May 1844. A note on the publication history: A Christmas Carol was first printed on Dec 19, 1843 in an edition of 6,000 copies. It was reprinted on January 6, 1844. It was printed 5 more times by the end of May of that year. In June of 1844, Dickens moved from Chapman & Hall to Bradbury & Evans. Bradbury & Evans printed A Christmas Carol in 1846 (presumably from the same plates as the earlier Chapman & Hall editions). Considering that the other Christmas books in this volume are 1846 Bradbury & Evans publications, the best guess is that this is the 1846 printing. That would make it an eleventh printing. Bound with: The Cricket on the Hearth. A Fairy Tale of Home. London. Bradbury and Evans. 1846. First Edition. Engraved title page and vignette. 174 pages. 12 illustrations in the text by Doyle, Leech, Maclise and Stanfield. Previous owners name on the title page Marianne Thesiger. Bound with: The Battle of Life; A Love Story. London. Bradbury and Evans. 1846. First Edition. Engraved title page and vignette. 175 pages. Final page is detached from the text block and still attached to marbled endpaper. All illustrations present. All three books bound together in a single volume. Green leather spine and corners, marbled paper over boards and matching endpapers. Spine strip missing and text block broken into several pieces, as detailed above. Both boards detached but present. 4.75 x 6.5 . Large bookplate on inside front cover Cecil Woods Vest. I have not been able to find any information on him. There is a detached blank page tucked inside the book with the name, Charles W Thesiger, 6 th Dragoons written on it. It s not clear if this is a blank page from one of these volumes or if it s from another book. As noted above, the name Marianne Thesiger is written on the title page of The Cricket on the Hearth. The Thesiger name is a prominent one and it adds interesting provenance to this book. Marianna Thesiger was married to Frederic Thesiger, the Baron of Chelmsford & Lord Chancellor of England (1858-1859). Her second son was Charles Wemyss Thesiger (he of the sixth Dragoons). Charles W. Thesiger was Aide-de-Campe to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, fought in the China War in 1860 and also in the Curragh Brigade. He commanded the Inniskillings (the Sixth Dragoons) from 1868-1878, and was then promoted to the Inspector of Yeomanry Cavalry. He was promoted to Major-General in 1884, became Inspector General of Cavalry in Ireland the next year, and was finally promoted to Lieutenant General in 1891. He died in 1903. It s wonderful to be able to place the book with its original owners & always s delight to discover such a complete biography of those owners on the incredible online resources available to us these days. A wonder

Dickens, Charles. THE BATTLE OF LIFE. A Love Story. , 1846.

Price: US$875.00 + shipping

This copy has the vignette title page in the fourth and usual state (Todd's state E1), with an angel holding the banner and with no publisher's imprint; in our experience, at least 90% and perhaps 95% of the copies encountered are of this state. This is a bright, near-fine copy, with very little wear; atypically, the original delicate endpapers are not cracked (the front paste-down bears the bookplate of the late Chicago professor Thomas S. Moch, and a small corner of the rear paste-down is chipped). Smith II pp 60-65; Podeschi (Yale) A116.

Description: First Issue, with all correct points (see Eckel, Smith, and Podeschi, referenced below). Foolscap 8vo: [8],270,2]pp, with four woodcut vignettes by Samuel Palmer (showing Villa d'Este, Colosseum, Street of the Tombs at Pompeii, and a vineyard scene). Original diaper-grain blue cloth, covers decorated in blind with elaborate arabesque border and round center ornament, spine decorated in blind and lettered in gilt, pale yellow coated end papers. A superb copy: internally virtually pristine, with crisp, clean pages; binding tight, gilt fresh and bright; lower cover with almost undetectable scattered areas of fading. Eckel, pp. 126-127. Smith II, pp. 48-58. Podeschi (Gimbel Collection) A98. Grolier (Dickens), pp. 101-103. Thomson 45. Pine-Coffin 844(5). Dickens, his wife, Kate, and her sister Georgina, with the Dickens's five children and several servants, left London by coach on July 2, 1844, bound for Italy. After one month's stay in the Villa Pallavicino della Peschiere, in Genoa (where Dickens wrote The Chimes), he and Kate left the children with Georgina and traveled south, stopping first in Pisa and Florence. In Rome, Dickens was captivated by the ruins, practically overcome, he later said, by the sight of the Coliseum. They also visited Herculaneum and Pompeii, making a perilous ascent to the rim of Vesuvius and peering into the "Hell of boiling fire below." Dickens published reports of his journey in the Daily News, as a series of eight "Travelling Letters. Written on the Road." Pictures from Italy (incorporating the letters, with five chapters added) appeared in book form on May 18, 1846, but not before hitting a rather tortuous bump in the road: "Clarkson Stanfield had agreed to illustrate the text for Dickens but, when he read those passages of the narrative in which Dickens satirises the excesses of Catholic devotion, he resigned from the project. Stanfield was himself a prominent English Catholic, after all, as Dickens knew, and he could scarcely be connected with a publication which treats his Church's ritual as little more than a parade of mummers. . . . As usual, Dickens went at once into action in order to find a substitute; fortunately and curiously, he chose a young artist who then had no real reputation, Samuel Palmer, whose wonderful illustrations are not the least of the merits of Pictures from Italy in its final state" (Ackroyd, Dickens, pp. 491-92). N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. DICKENS, Charles.. The Adventures of Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy's Progress. With twenty-four illustrations on steel, by George Cruikshank. A new edition, revised and corrected.. London: Published for the author, by Bradbury & Evans, 1846, 1846.

Price: US$1604.08 + shipping

Description: First one-volume edition of the author's second novel, the first appearance of the definitive text, revised by Dickens from the prior three-volume edition. This copy comes from the library of William Foyle and is in an attractive Samuel Tout binding. Oliver Twist was first published serially between February 1837 and April 1839 in Bentley's Miscellany and then as a three-volume book by Richard Bentley in 1838. This single volume was substantially revised by Dickens, who had bought back his copyright from Bentley. His revisions offer a more dramatic rendering of the text, in light of his subsequent experience of the novel's public readings. The one-volume edition was issued in ten monthly parts from January to October 1846, and in the present form on completion. This edition is scarcer than the preceding three-volume edition: "many collectors prize this edition very highly and consequently it is the more valuable of the Oliver Twists" (Eckel, p. 62). From 1868 to 1879, Samuel Tout (1841-1902) bound books in Soho, London. He then worked in Whitechapel with William Coward, continuing on his own after 1880. Tout was also an early member of the staff of Karslake's Hampstead Bindery, which opened in Charing Cross in 1898. Provenance: though unmarked as such, this copy comes from the collection of William Foyle (1883-1963), the co-founder of the eponymous chain of booksellers. Foyle's grandson acquired a substantial portion of the original collection at the landmark Foyle Library sale in 2000, including the present copy. Eckel, pp. 59-63; Gimbel A39; Kremers, pp. 90-3 & 188-95. Octavo (208 x 129 mm). Late 19th-century brown half morocco by Tout, spine with raised bands forming six compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled paper sides and endpapers, all edges gilt, green silk bookmarker. With 24 steel-engraved plates by George Cruikshank. With 19th-century armorial bookplate of Daniel Drew (1850-1914) of Burnley on the front pastedown. Bound without the half-title. Light rubbing, faint sunning to spine, minor foxing to endpapers and outer leaves, slight browning to content margins, faint offsetting from plates to several leaves: a very good copy.

DICKENS, Charles.. The Cricket on the Hearth. A fairy tale of home.. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846 [i.e. 1845], 1846.

Price: US$1924.90 + shipping

Description: First edition, with the first state of the advertisement leaf, and unusual thus - Smith notes he has only seen a few copies in this state. The Cricket on the Hearth, the third of Dickens's five Christmas books, was published on 20 December 1845, the title page postdated 1846. It proved very popular - Dickens's friend Forster recorded that it doubled the circulation of its predecessors. That is since recognized as an exaggeration, but it nonetheless quickly underwent two editions, and by January there were 17 stage adaptations in progress (Schlicke, p. 128). The first state has the advertisement for Oliver Twist opening in two italic lines, the second state has the notice expanded to three. Smith, II, 6; Eckel, pp. 119-20. Paul Schlicke, ed., The Oxford Companion to Charles Dickens, 2011. Octavo. Original red cloth, lettering and decoration to spine and front cover in gilt, elaborate frame stamped in blind to covers, yellow coated endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a custom red cloth solander box. Engraved frontispiece and title page, 12 illustrations in the text. Contemporary bookseller's ticket of G. Mann of Cornhill to front pastedown, and bookplate of Emanuel Boutcher (1824-1888) of Grateley House in Hampshire. Recent bookplate of collector Peter Russell mounted to inside cover of box. Very minimal sunning to spine and trivial splits at joint ends, ever so slightly shaken. A near-fine copy.

Condition: Very Good

Description: This is a Very Good condition copy of the third edition of this classic title, a highly significant revised and corrected version. This re-issue is both desirable and quite scarce, and forms the basis for the Oliver Twist text as currently published. The author's preface in this edition adds to its importance. The cover is half leather and half boards, with ribbed leather back strip featuring gilded print and ornamentation. The sewn binding is tight. The back strip is solidly attached to the front cover, however, it is separated from the back cover. A small, <.5-inch, piece is missing from the back strip where it intersects with the back cover, but is included to re-glue. We will re-glue the entire back strip, if so requested. The book's interior is clean, with some foxing on some pages. Included are 24 one-sided illustrated plates, which are steel engravings produced by George Cruikshank, the same illustrator as the 1838 first edition of this title. Charles Dickens is the attributed author in this edition, rather than the Boz pen-name he used in 1838.

DICKENS, Charles.. The Adventures of Oliver Twist; or, The Parish Boy's Progress. With twenty-four illustrations on steel, by George Cruikshank. A new edition, revised and corrected.. London: for the author, by Bradbury & Evans, 1846, 1846.

Price: US$3208.16 + shipping

Description: First one-volume edition of Dickens's second novel. This single volume was substantially revised by Dickens, who had bought back his copyright from the original publisher Bentley; many of his revisions were in the direction of a more dramatic rendering of the text, in light of his experience of public readings. Oliver Twist was first published serially between February 1837 and April 1839 in Bentley's Miscellany, and as a three-volume book by Richard Bentley in 1838 (six months before the initial serialization was complete). "Oliver Twist was originally conceived as a satire on the new poor law of 1834 which herded the destitute and the helpless into harshly run union workhouses, and which was perceived by Dickens as a monstrously unjust and inhumane piece of legislation (he was still fiercely attacking it in Our Mutual Friend in 1865). Once the scene shifted to London, however, Oliver Twist developed into a unique and compelling blend of a 'realistic' tale about thieves and prostitutes and a melodrama with strong metaphysical overtones. The pathos of little Oliver (the first of many such child figures in Dickens), the farcical comedy of the Bumbles, the sinister fascination of Fagin, the horror of Nancy's murder, and the powerful evocation of London's dark and labyrinthine criminal underworld, all helped to drive Dickens's popularity to new heights" (ODNB). Gimbel A39; Carr B98. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and blocked in gilt, covers panelled in blind, gilt garland to front cover, repeated in blind to rear cover, light yellow endpapers. Frontispiece and 23 steel-engraved plates by George Cruikshank. Spine sunned, light wear to cloth around extremities and some superficial splitting to rear joint, some minor marks within but on the whole clean and fresh, very good condition overall.

DICKENS, Charles.. Dombey and Son.. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846-48, 1846.

Price: US$3208.16 + shipping

Description: First edition, in the original monthly parts published from September 1846 to March 1848, an attractive set of the novel "now recognized as one of the greatest of all his works. It is also the first one to have an explicitly contemporary setting" (ODNB). This set has the early state of the Dombey and Son Advertiser in part XIII ("October, 1847" unbroken on p. 1). The errata in part XIX & XX in the preferred two line state. All but one of the called for issue points are in their earliest states, with "capatin" in part XI at p. 324, as the "earliest issue"; for part XIV the word "if" on p. 426 is omitted also stated as the "earliest issue", although p. 431 is numbered correctly, whereas they call for it to be omitted in "earlier copies". The rear cover to part XVIII is a variant to that called for by Hatton and Cleaver with the header "Public Applause" in place of the called for"The Spring Season". As often there are a few trivial variations to the rear adverts as called for by Hatton & Cleaver: part III lacking rear ads (1), (3), and (4); part V with an uncalled for 2 pp. ad for The National Cyclopedia and lacking the errata slip; part X lacking rear ad (2); part XI lacking the rear slip; part XII the rear ad for Kaye's Worsdell's Pills is a variant with the header "Important Testimonials" in place of "Question! Question! Question!"; part XVI lacking Punch slip at front and rear ad; part XVII lacking the front slip and rear ad; part XIX lacking rear ads (3), (4), & (5), ad (2) only 4 pp. and ad (6) only 6 pp. Copies almost never conform exactly to Hatton & Cleaver's exhaustive collation. Eckel, pp. 74-76; Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 227-250. 20 numbers bound in 19 monthly parts as issued. Original green wrappers printed in black, the textual numbers with designs by Phiz. Housed in 2 custom straight-grain morocco-backed marbled paper board and cloth chemises. With 40 etched and lithographic plates by Phiz (Hatton and Cleaver noting there is no priority of issue between the etchings and lithographs); plate 35 being the first published example of a "dark plate". Morocco book label of one William Bunker to neatly repaired chemises. Neat ownership inscriptions to head of front wrappers of part IV, VI, VIII, IX, XVII. Wrappers slightly browned, creasing and nicks to extremities, overall a very good set. Plates browned in part VI, IX, XVII, small paper repair to part XIX & XX.

Dickens, Charles. Dealings with the Firm of DOMBEY AND SON [20 parts in 19]. , 1846.

Price: US$3250.00 + shipping

Description: [a handsome set] Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation. With Illustrations by H.K. Browne. [In 20-in-19 monthly serial parts.] London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846-1848. Original light blue-green pictorial wrappers. First Edition, as issued in 20-in-19 monthly serial parts beginning in October 1846 and ending in April 1848. The serialization of this novel began upon the end of serialization of OLIVER TWIST (the scarcest of all "Dickens in parts," occurring eight years after its publication in book form); until OLIVER TWIST these monthly parts of Dickens's works were issued by Chapman & Hall, but were now being issued by Bradbury & Evans. Part XVIII of DOMBEY AND SON includes the first so-called "dark plate" (appropriately, "On the dark Road") to appear in a Dickens work -- possible due to a new process; there would be another in DAVID COPPERFIELD, followed by ten in BLEAK HOUSE and eight in LITTLE DORRIT. At the end of serialization, DOMBEY AND SON was published in book form -- the preliminary leaves for which are supplied at the end of the final monthly part. As for issue points (there are three), this set like most is mixed: it reads "Capatin" on p. 324 (the uncommon 1st state), "if" is absent on p. 426 (1st state), and "431" is present on that page (2nd state) -- curious, in that pages 426 and 431 are in the same part. (The word "Delight" on page 284 is a faux issue point, since all copies in parts have that error.) This is a very good-plus set -- fine in appearance, because all the wrappers (front and rear) are unusually clean; six of the front wrappers bear the small ink-stamp of "Webster & Co., 60 Piccadilly". Two of the rear wrappers (I and XVI) are "borrowed" from a different part, and all the delicate (plain) spines are expertly renewed. Notably, this set has ALL the advertisements and slips that are specified in the Hatton & Cleaver bibliography for a complete set. All the plates have varying degrees of darkening or foxing in the margins, but only Part II has plates that are significantly foxed. In all, an absolutely complete, clean set, with allowances for the "renewals." Hatton & Cleaver pp 225-250. Housed in a handsome clamshell case with morocco spine.

Dickens, Charles. Illustrations by H.K. Browne. Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son, Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation.. Bradbury & Evans 1846-48, London, 1846.

Price: US$4000.00 + shipping

Description: First edition in the scarce original parts of Dickens tale of the fortunes of the Dombey shipping firm with "delight" for "joy" on page 284. Octavo, original wrappers, with 40 etchings by Halbot Knight Brown, containing all advertisements as issued. In very good condition. Housed in a custom full morocco and chemise pull-off case. Scarce and desirable. Dombey and Son "was well received by its readers, and is considered to be the first novel that reflects Dickens's artistic maturity… Dickens told his first biographer, 'It was to do with Pride what its predecessor [Martin Chuzzlewit] has done with Selfishness" (Schlicke, 280). The work "has a sense of the numinous, is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things, than any of Dickens' previous novels. It is larger in conception, so that human life is seen in terms of its beginning and its end, so that grief and forgiveness become more powerful forces within it… Dickens is aware of its status as art and provides here a simulacrum of human life touched by majesty and purpose" (Ackroyd, 526). The original serials contain the first of Browne's "dark plates" ("On the dark Road," in part 18), created by the engraver's lining machine and roulettes that tint the etched plate, creating heightened contrast (Johannsen, Phiz, 309).
