Description: The sole UK printing published by The Golden Cockerel Press, Berkshire in 1936. The Book is in Near Fine condition with just some light fading of the morocco spine but the gilt titling remains bright. The Numbered Limited Special Edition, this being number 95 of only 300 special copies printed on F.J. Head's hand-made paper. Title page printed in gold and black. Quarter green morocco with cockerel pattern yellow cloth covered boards. Gilt title on spine. T.E.G., others uncut. Free from inscriptions and bookplates. Light offsetting to the blank end-papers. The limitation page is Signed by ALL Four partners : Christopher Sandford, Anthony Sandford, L.J. Newbery, and Owen Rutter. The majority of copies were only signed by one or two partners. 34 wood engravings selected from the books including works by John Farleigh, Celia Fiennes, Tirzah Garwood, Robert Gibbings, Eric Gill, Gertrude Hermes, Blair Hughes-Stanton, David Jones, Lynton Lamb, Agnes Miller Parker, John Nash, Paul Nash, Eric Ravilious and Lettice Sandford. Introduction by Humbert Wolfe with a Foreword & Notes by the four Partners above. There was also an unnumbered unsigned trade edition. Accompanied by the loosely inserted Publisher’s 4 page Prospectus with the specimen full page Eric Ravilious B/W illustration (taken from 'Consequences') and the reproduction of the title page to the front cover. This is in fine condition and a very scarce item in its own right. The book is protected in a lose Mylar archival cover. We have never handled another copy signed by all four partners before. Lacks the 2 folding maps. Minor spotting to end pages. This is the first printing of Lawrence's undergraduate history thesis of 1910. In this work, Lawrence argues that the Crusaders, after seeing the fortifications built in the Middle East, went back to Europe to build their own battlements along the same lines. Numerous castle plans and photos. The second volume includes an introduction by Lawrence's mother and reprints his letters to her.
