Condition: Good

Description: This captivating Mediterranean novel was written by Lawrence Durrell immediately after finishing his exquisite vignette about Corfu, Prospero's Cell. The story is set on Crete just after the War, as an odd assortment of English travellers come ashore from a cruise ship to explore the island and in particular to examine a dangerous local labyrinth. They include an extrovert painter, a spiritualist, a Protestant spinster with a fox terrier, an antiquarian peer and minor poet, a soldier with guilty memories of the Cretan resistance, a pretty convalescent and an eccentric married couple. This was republished as 'The Dark Labyrinth' in 1958. / This is a 'cloth-bound' 1st edition hardback in good condition-the cloth to the cover is faded&rubbed & the text pages have 'browned'. (238 pages).

Condition: Very Good

Description: First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 238pp. Brown cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine. Some toning to the lesser-quality paperstock, as is invariably the case, and with a small area of discolouration to the cloth at the head of the backstrip where the dust wrapper is defective. Former owner name neatly inked to the head of the front free endpaper. A very good copy in the uncommon dust wrapper, non-price-clipped but with a centimetre of loss from the head of the spine panel, several fractions of further loss from the corner tips, and a touch of fading, soiling and chafing. The author's Crete-based fourth novel, in-part inspired by the adventures of his friends Paddy Leigh Fermor and Xan Fielding. It was subsequently republished in 1958 as 'The Dark Labyrinth' (which was Durrell's preferred original title).
