J. D. Salinger. The Catcher in the Rye. Little Brown, 1951.

Price: US$4.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Anyone who has read J.D. Salinger's New Yorker stories ? particularly A Perfect Day for Bananafish, Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut, The Laughing Man, and For Esme ? With Love and Squalor, will not be surprised by the fact that his first novel is fully of children. The hero-narrator of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days. The boy himself is at once too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his story. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was born in the world not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it. There are many voices in this novel: children's voices, adult voices, underground voices-but Holden's voice is the most eloquent of all. Transcending his own vernacular, yet remaining marvelously faithful to it, he issues a perfectly articulated cry of mixed pain and pleasure. However, like most lovers and clowns and poets of the higher orders, he keeps most of the pain to, and for, himself. The pleasure he gives away, or sets aside, with all his heart. It is there for the reader who can handle it to keep. Piece(s) of the spine missing. Please note the image in this listing is a stock photo and may not match the covers of the actual item.

We believe this to be a later printing. No overt indications that it is either a first edition, an early printing, or for that matter a book-club edition. Copyright page simply provides a copyright date of 1951. The Catcher in the Rye was partially published in serial form in 1945–46 before being novelized in 1951. The first edition was stated as such and at least the second printing was marked as such. Hardcover: Lacks DJ. Originally intended for adults, it is often read by adolescents for its themes of angst and alienation, and as a critique of superficiality in society. The novel also deals with themes of innocence, identity, belonging, loss, connection, sex, and depression. The main character, Holden Caulfield, has become an icon for teenage rebellion. Caulfield, nearly of age, gives his opinion on a wide variety of topics as he narrates his recent life events. It a timeless classic that takes readers on a poignant journey into the mind of its young protagonist, Holden Caulfield. The novel presents a raw and introspective narrative, centered around the disillusioned yet perceptive sixteen-year-old navigating the complexities of life in New York City. Salinger's masterful storytelling unfolds as Holden Caulfield embarks on a three-day odyssey after leaving his prep school, delving into the heart of New York City. The novel artfully weaves the voices of children, adults, and the underground society, but it is Holden's voice that resonates the loudest. His eloquence, a blend of simplicity and complexity, offers a deeply personal insight into his world. Holden Caulfield emerges as a character both relatable and enigmatic, his yearning for authenticity and genuine human connection palpable throughout the narrative. Salinger beautifully captures the tumultuous emotions and inner turmoil of adolescence, making the character and his experiences incredibly genuine and evocative. The novel's brilliance lies in Salinger's ability to transcend vernacular while maintaining an authentic portrayal of Holden's unique voice. The contrast between Holden's attraction to beauty and his internal pain creates a compelling duality that resonates with readers. Holden's self-imposed isolation and his struggle to grapple with life's complexities evoke both empathy and admiration for his resilience. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 216 pages

Description: NEAR FINE book, FAIR DJ(in Brodart). Early BOMC. Jacob's Salinger photo on DJ rear panel. Bright book, clean but worn DJ. An unusual EXLIB. (2) Book itself with only EXLIB sign being the card pockets inside the rear cover. It does apear that only one person ever checked this book out. NO EXLIB tp stamps or stamped page edges. Two book flaws: (1) lightly bumped tips and spine ends (2) light glue browning along the pastedown gutters. DJ gutters lines have been scotch taped on the inside. All other DJ flaws shown in the pix.

In 1960, a teacher was fired, and later reinstated, for assigning the novel in class. Between 1961 and 1982, The Catcher in the Rye was the most censored book in high schools and libraries in the United States. In 1981, it was both the most censored book and the second most taught book in public schools in the United States.

Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. Previous owner's name present to the FFEP. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. J. D. Salinger's classic novel of teenage angst and rebellion was first published in 1951. EB; Book Club Edition; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 277 pages

J. D. Salinger. THE CATCHER IN THE RYE (First UK edition in remains of dustwrapper). Hamish Hamilton, London, 1951.

Price: US$320.69 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First UK edition published in 1951. Originally published in the US by Little Brown & Co., Boston on 16th July 1951. The UK edition has the attractive dustwrapper illustration by Fritz Wegner. ***Very good in light-blue cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The silver is still nice and bright. The boards are quite clean and unmarked, but there is browning and fading to the top and tail of the spine and edges of the boards. There is some creasing at the top of the spine and front board near the spine, with a small closed tear to the cloth. Small bump to the fore-edge of the front board. Corners sharp. The spine is tight with no reading lean. There is hardly any foxing to the page block edges, which are quite clean - the top edge just slightly darkened. Internally the book is also very good, with clean pages and just very light foxing to the first and last few pages. Small stain at the top corner of the front free endpaper. Original readers of the book have slightly creased the bottom edge of the pages where they have turned each page, but this is not very noticeable. No serious creasing and no tears. There is a neat contemporary gift inscription to the front free endpaper 'From John, Christmas 1951'. ***In what can best be described as a poor surviving example of the original illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped and retains the original publisher's printed price of 10s. 6d. net. Please note that the spine of the dustwrapper has completely gone, but the front and back panels and foldover flaps are still present! There are chips out of the top edge of the front panel, but Fritz Wegner's distinctive cover art is still largely complete. The back panel also has some loss at the top edge but this doesn't affect any of the text. Edge wear and small areas of loss at the corner tips and extremities. Small closed tear and associated creasing to the bottom edge of the back panel which is however quite clean. (Please see scans) ***210mm x 145mm. 253 pages. ***'"The Catcher in the Rye" is a novel by J. D. Salinger, partially published in serial form in 1945-1946 and as a novel in 1951. It was originally intended for adults but is often read by adolescents for its themes of angst, alienation, and as a critique of superficiality in society. It has been translated widely. The novel's protagonist Holden Caulfield has become an icon for teenage rebellion. The novel also deals with complex issues of innocence, identity, belonging, loss, connection, sex, and depression. The novel was included on Time Magazine's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923, and it was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century."' (Wiki) ***"Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around--nobody big, I mean--except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all." (p.205-6) ***A first UK edition of J. D. Salinger's fabulously successful debut, and only, novel, "The Catcher in the Rye". Whilst this example has many faults as described, copies of the true first UK edition are now very hard to find in any condition now. Copies retaining the dustwrapper are even scarcer, as the dustwrapper is extremely thin and fragile - most copies are damaged to a greater or lesser degree. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Description: First Canadian edition. Though printed in the US, this edition states on the copyright page "Published in Canada by McClelland and Stewart Limited." This edition, a book club edition, was the "first" Canadian edition. It differs slightly from the US book club edition. Laid in the "The Catcher in the Rye" A report by Clifton Fadiman, reprinted from the Book-of-the-Month News. There are two drawings, one of Holden Caufield, and two quotes from the book. Salinger was very upset about these illustrations and complained about them. These leaflets, whether recalled or withdrawn, are very scarce. The book is near fine with a tiny ownership label on the bottom of the front free endpaper. The jacket has some minor wear and sunning to spine and some small chilling to the folds. The leaflet is fine. Very scarce edition, especially with the leaflet. In twenty years, I have seen only one other copy of this Canadian edition with the leaflet.

Price: US$715.00 + shipping

Description: First Book Club issue but with dustwrapper with printed price on the turnover. With a very questionable J D Salinger signature penned under the author's printed name on the title page. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and with the original pictorial dustjacket. 277 pp. A fine copy with the jacket in beautifully preserved condition. AN AMERICAN 20TH CENTURY CLASSIC. J.D. Salinger’s first and still, most famous work of all. Salinger tapped into a common and necessary theme in American literature with his unhappy teenage character, Holden Caulfield, who runs away from his boarding school as part of his disgust with 'phoniness'. Caufield's feelings and the idiom in which he communicates them have made the book a symbol of purity and sensitivity to generations of readers and has insured that it will remain a particularly coveted title in modern literature.

Description: The Book of the Month Club edition of Salinger's classic first book. Includes the now-uncommon Clifton Fadiman promotional pamphlet, reprinted from the Book-of-the-Month Club News, and with two line drawing illustrations of passages from the book. Salinger was notoriously touchy about images of his writings, and he forced the paperback publisher to change its original cover that showed Holden Caulfield carrying a suitcase to the now-famous plain-text-on-a-red-background, so it is unusual to see visual images of Salinger's text. A fine copy in a bright, very good dust jacket with a small, internally tape-mended chip at the crown.

Description: 159 pp.277 pp. 8vo, publisher's black cloth in dust jacket priced $ 3.00. First edition, second printing. Corners bumped; gilt lettering on spine oxidized; tiny areas of insect damage to the surface of the cloth; otherwise very good. The jacket, a few millimeters shorter than the volume, has not been supplied. There is a chip at the top of the backstrip (not affecting any lettering), a snag to the backstrip below the author's name, and a short closed tear at the bottom of the front joint fold. Nevertheless, a bright attractive example of the second printing, which appeared in the same month as the first.
