We believe this to be a later printing. No overt indications that it is either a first edition, an early printing, or for that matter a book-club edition. Copyright page simply provides a copyright date of 1951. The Catcher in the Rye was partially published in serial form in 1945–46 before being novelized in 1951. The first edition was stated as such and at least the second printing was marked as such. Hardcover: Lacks DJ. Originally intended for adults, it is often read by adolescents for its themes of angst and alienation, and as a critique of superficiality in society. The novel also deals with themes of innocence, identity, belonging, loss, connection, sex, and depression. The main character, Holden Caulfield, has become an icon for teenage rebellion. Caulfield, nearly of age, gives his opinion on a wide variety of topics as he narrates his recent life events. It a timeless classic that takes readers on a poignant journey into the mind of its young protagonist, Holden Caulfield. The novel presents a raw and introspective narrative, centered around the disillusioned yet perceptive sixteen-year-old navigating the complexities of life in New York City. Salinger's masterful storytelling unfolds as Holden Caulfield embarks on a three-day odyssey after leaving his prep school, delving into the heart of New York City. The novel artfully weaves the voices of children, adults, and the underground society, but it is Holden's voice that resonates the loudest. His eloquence, a blend of simplicity and complexity, offers a deeply personal insight into his world. Holden Caulfield emerges as a character both relatable and enigmatic, his yearning for authenticity and genuine human connection palpable throughout the narrative. Salinger beautifully captures the tumultuous emotions and inner turmoil of adolescence, making the character and his experiences incredibly genuine and evocative. The novel's brilliance lies in Salinger's ability to transcend vernacular while maintaining an authentic portrayal of Holden's unique voice. The contrast between Holden's attraction to beauty and his internal pain creates a compelling duality that resonates with readers. Holden's self-imposed isolation and his struggle to grapple with life's complexities evoke both empathy and admiration for his resilience. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 216 pages

J. D. Salinger. THE CATCHER IN THE RYE (First UK edition in remains of dustwrapper). Hamish Hamilton, London, 1951.

Price: US$320.67 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First UK edition published in 1951. Originally published in the US by Little Brown & Co., Boston on 16th July 1951. The UK edition has the attractive dustwrapper illustration by Fritz Wegner. ***Very good in light-blue cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The silver is still nice and bright. The boards are quite clean and unmarked, but there is browning and fading to the top and tail of the spine and edges of the boards. There is some creasing at the top of the spine and front board near the spine, with a small closed tear to the cloth. Small bump to the fore-edge of the front board. Corners sharp. The spine is tight with no reading lean. There is hardly any foxing to the page block edges, which are quite clean - the top edge just slightly darkened. Internally the book is also very good, with clean pages and just very light foxing to the first and last few pages. Small stain at the top corner of the front free endpaper. Original readers of the book have slightly creased the bottom edge of the pages where they have turned each page, but this is not very noticeable. No serious creasing and no tears. There is a neat contemporary gift inscription to the front free endpaper 'From John, Christmas 1951'. ***In what can best be described as a poor surviving example of the original illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped and retains the original publisher's printed price of 10s. 6d. net. Please note that the spine of the dustwrapper has completely gone, but the front and back panels and foldover flaps are still present! There are chips out of the top edge of the front panel, but Fritz Wegner's distinctive cover art is still largely complete. The back panel also has some loss at the top edge but this doesn't affect any of the text. Edge wear and small areas of loss at the corner tips and extremities. Small closed tear and associated creasing to the bottom edge of the back panel which is however quite clean. (Please see scans) ***210mm x 145mm. 253 pages. ***'"The Catcher in the Rye" is a novel by J. D. Salinger, partially published in serial form in 1945-1946 and as a novel in 1951. It was originally intended for adults but is often read by adolescents for its themes of angst, alienation, and as a critique of superficiality in society. It has been translated widely. The novel was included on Time Magazine's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923, and it was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century."' (Wiki) ***"Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around--nobody big, I mean--except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all." (p.205-6) ***A first UK edition of J. D. Salinger's fabulously successful debut, and only, novel, "The Catcher in the Rye". Whilst this example has many faults as described, copies of the true first UK edition are now very hard to find in any condition now. Copies retaining the dustwrapper are even scarcer, as the dustwrapper is extremely thin and fragile - most copies are damaged to a greater or lesser degree. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Price: US$715.00 + shipping

Description: First Book Club issue but with dustwrapper with printed price on the turnover. With a very questionable J D Salinger signature penned under the author's printed name on the title page. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and with the original pictorial dustjacket. 277 pp. A fine copy with the jacket in beautifully preserved condition. AN AMERICAN 20TH CENTURY CLASSIC. J.D. Salinger’s first and still, most famous work of all. Salinger tapped into a common and necessary theme in American literature with his unhappy teenage character, Holden Caulfield, who runs away from his boarding school as part of his disgust with 'phoniness'. Caufield's feelings and the idiom in which he communicates them have made the book a symbol of purity and sensitivity to generations of readers and has insured that it will remain a particularly coveted title in modern literature.

The Catcher in the Rye is a 1951 novel by J. D. Salinger. A controversial novel originally published for adults, it has since become popular with adolescent readers for its themes of teenage angst and alienation. It has been translated into almost all of the world's major languages. Around 1 million copies are sold each year with total sales of more than 65 million books. The novel's protagonist Holden Caulfield has become an icon for teenage rebellion. The novel also deals with complex issues of innocence, identity, belonging, loss, and connection. The novel was included on Time's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923, and it was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003, it was listed at #15 on the BBC's survey The Big Read. (Wikipedia) First Edition with "First Edition" slug on the copyright page and no subsequent printings listed.

J.D. Salinger. Catcher in the Rye. Little Brown, 1951.

Price: US$15000.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger. Little Brown, Boston. 1951 first American edition first printing. Book and first issue dust jacket in very good condition. 8vo. Original black cloth (some spotting and discoloration to pastedowns and gutters, block edges very slightly spotted); original first issue dust-jacket printed in red, black and yellow with cropped photograph of Salinger on rear cover, flap priced at $3.00 (a few repairs to verso along top edge and front flap fold, spine panel lightly faded with small dampstain near foot, flap folds a little rubbed, some light spotting on verso); housed in quarter morocco folding case. The novel’s protagonist, Holden Caulfield, has entered the pantheon of American literary heroes. "The Catcher in the Rye was a symptom of a need, after a ghastly war and during a ghastly pseudo-peace, for the young to raise a voice of protest against the failures of the adult world. The young used many voices—anger, contempt, self-pity—but the quietest, that of a decent perplexed American adolescent, proved the most telling" (Anthony Burgess, 99 Novels, pp. 53-54). One of the most important modern novels to collect, especially rare in first issue dust jacket and in good condition

Salinger, J. D. [Jerome David]. The Catcher in the Rye. Little, Brown & Co, Boston, 1951.

Price: US$17500.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: A Fine copy of the book in Near Fine dust jacket. Jacket with the spine a bit toned, as often, and two small amateur tap repairs to the verso. Rear panel a bit scratched and rubbed, but overall a very presentable copy of the work. With all relevant issue points, including original price (in the correct place on the flap), Salinger's hair touching the upper edge of the rear panel, and "First Edition" stated on the copyright page. Housed in a custom slipcase with chemise. Salinger's novel was not the first coming-of-age story to highlight teenage angst, but it sits squarely at the pinnacle of those efforts. It offers Holden Caulfield's perspective on school, New York City, sexuality, family and friends, and, of course, phonies, with a subtext on alienation and loneliness running throughout the book. "In American writing, there are three perfect books, which seem to speak to every reader and condition: Huckleberry Finn, The Great Gatsby, and The Catcher in the Rye. Of the three, only Catcher defines an entire region of human experience: it isâ€"in French and Dutch as much as in Englishâ€"the handbook of the adolescent heart" (The New Yorker). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

SALINGER, J. D.. The Catcher in the Rye.. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1951, 1951.

Price: US$288601.46 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, extremely rare presentation copy, inscribed by the author to the teenage son of his childhood friend Ada on the front free endpaper: "To Charles Kirtz with every good wish from J. D. Salinger (extra greetings to Ada and Victor from Sonny Salinger) New York 10/18/56". This is an exceptional rarity: signed or inscribed copies by the reclusive author are legendarily rare. The informal sign-off, "Sonny", was the nickname given to Salinger by his parents when he was born. Salinger, who grew up alongside Ada and her brother Victor in the same New York apartment house, presented Ada's sons, Charles (then around the same age as Holden Caulfield) and William, each with an inscribed first edition. He passed on the copies to the boys via Ada's mother, Ann, whose bookplate is on the front pastedown. An inscribed copy of Catcher in the Rye is perhaps the most elusive prize in 20th-century literature. Auction records show only one appearance of an inscribed first edition (at Doyle in 2010). Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket, designed by Michael Mitchell. Housed in a red quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. A fine copy, in a lovely example of the dust jacket, spine panel mildly toned, extremities lightly rubbed and nicked, unclipped, the notoriously fugitive red exceptionally bright and fresh.
