Heller, Joseph. CATCH-22. Simon & Schuster, New York, 1961.
Price: US$25.25 + shipping
Condition: Very Good
Description: Heller's first novel has become one of the great anti-war novels. It is a darkly satiric story of a U.S. bomber squadron stationed on a small island off Italy, flying missions over Germany during World War II. The squadron's commander, Col. Cathcart, keeps raising the number of missions the bomber crews must fly before they can rotate home. Yossarian, a bombadier, who wants to live forever, knows it is suicidal to keep flying mission after mission. The only way to stop is for USAF doctors to diagnose him as insane. Unfortunately, not wanting to fly suicidal missions is considered proof of sanity since only the insane would want to continue flying. This copy is the first Book Club Edition, issued in 1961, in blue cloth boards with white lettering on the spine and an orange top edge on the text. The dustjacket, with Heller's photo on the back panel, retains the look of the original first edition. The book was the basis for a 1970 movie directed by Mike Nichols. Boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square. The dustjacket's spine shows a long, very narrow (about 1/8th inch) stain, o/w only minor surface and edge wear.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping
Condition: Good
Description: Hardcover. Bound in dark red cloth with silver lettering on the spine. White DJ with blue, black and red -- the recognizable DJ of the US edition. No publisher on the spine of the DJ or the book. DJ priced $5.95 at the bottom of the front flap. Black and white photo of Heller on the back cover is quite grainy. 443 pages. No date on the title page. Copyright page dated 1955 and 1961, with several lines of text in Japanese, but nothing there in English. (the rest of the book is in English, with no other Japanese). The true first edition of this modern classic was published by Simon & Schuster in 1961. It states "first edition" on the title page. This copy is not that copy. I have not been able to determine what, exactly, this copy is, except to say that it's a Japanese copy, probably pirated, certainly quite scarce. Binding is good and tight. DJ is faded where it should be white, with bumps to corners and some curling to the top edge. It is protected with a mylar cover. Please email with questions or to request photos.

This is a 1st trade edition, 2nd printing of the work published by Simon & Schuster in 1961. The original dust jacket is protected from further wear by a Mylar sleeve. *********************************************** "Catch-22 is one of this century's greatest works of American literature. First published m 1961, Joseph Heller's profound and compelling novel has appeared on nearly every list of must read fiction. It is a classic in every sense of the word. Catch-22 took the war novel genre to a new level, shocking us with its clever and disturbing style. ***** Set in a World War II American bomber squadron off the coast of Italy, Catch-22 is the story of John Yossarian, who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. Yossarian is also trying to decode the meaning of Catch-22, a mysterious regulation that proves that insane people are really the sanest, while the supposedly sensible people are the true madmen. And this novel is full of madmen -- Colonel Cathcart, who keeps raising the number of missions the men must fly m order to finish their tour; Milo Minderbinder, a dedicated entrepreneur who bombs his own airfield when the Germans offer him an extra 6 percent; Major Major Major, whose tragedy in life is that he resembles Henry Fonda; and Major -- de Coverley, whose face is so forbidding no one has dared ask his name. ***** No novel before or since has matched Catch-22's intensity and brilliance in depicting the brutal insanity of war. Heller satirizes military bureaucracy with bitter, stinging humor, all the while telling the darkly comic story of Yossarian, a bombardier who refuses to die. Nearly forty years later, Yossarian lives" ///////////////////////////////////////////////// Joseph Heller (May 1, 1923 December 12, 1999) was an American author of novels, short stories, plays, and screenplays. His best-known work is the 1961 novel Catch-22, a satire on war and bureaucracy, whose title has become a synonym for an absurd or contradictory choice. He was nominated in 1972 for the Nobel Prize in Literature. . . . ///// In the years after its release in paperback in October 1962, . . . , Catch-22 caught the imaginations of many baby boomers, who identified with the novel's anti-war sentiments. The book went on to sell 10 million copies in the United States. The novel's title became a standard term in English and other languages for a dilemma with no easy way out. Now considered a classic, the book was listed at number 7 on Modern Library's list of the top 100 novels of the century. . . . ///// After the publication of Catch-22, Heller resumed a part-time academic career as an adjunct professor of creative writing at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania. In the 1970s, Heller taught creative writing as a distinguished professor at the City College of New York." **********The above text was taken from, respectively, Simon & Shuster publishing (via Google Books) and Wikipedia.

Boards and text block a little bruised, and modest foxing on front pastedown. Wrapper has some loss on head and tail of spine. Overall, a lovely copy. Catch 22 is frequently cited as one of the greatest literary works of the twentieth century. The novel is set during World War II, and looks into the experiences of Captain John Yossarian and the other airmen in the camp, who attempt to maintain their sanity while fulfilling their service requirements so that they may return home. The phrase "Catch-22" has entered into the English language, referring to a dilemma or difficult circumstance from which there is no escape because of mutually conflicting or dependent conditions. In the novel, airmen who were crazy were not obliged to fly missions, but anyone who applied to stop flying was showing a rational concern for their safety, and was professed to be sane. The novel is the basis for the 1970 film starring, among others, Alan Arkin, Richard Benjamin, Paula Prentiss, Charles Grodin, Jon Voight, Art Garfunkel, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Martin Sheen, and Orson Welles.

Heller, Joseph. Catch-22.. Simon & Schuster, New York, 1961.
Price: US$8500.00 + shipping
Description: First edition of Heller's classic first book. Octavo, original blue cloth. Presentation coy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Albert Raman, Best wishes to you. Joseph Heller 3/20/80 New York." The recipient was a lawyer and well-known book collector. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example with noted provenance. "Catch-22, Joseph Heller's first and best-known novel, depicts a military world turned upside down. In Heller's World War II, a supplies manager has more power than a general, and anyone seeking a discharge on the grounds of insanity is declared sane enough to keep on fighting. When the novel appeared in 1961, World War II veterans appreciated its satire of the military bureaucracy and chaos of war. By the mid-1960's, it had become a cult classic among counterculture activists for its biting indictments of war. Many consider the novel to be the definitive statement of the modern antiwar position. The phrase 'Catch-22', symbolizing the absurdity of all institutional logic, has become a permanent part of our language" (NYPL Books of the Century 177). Basis for the 1970 film directed by Mike Nichols. The cast included Alan Arkin, Bob Balaban, Martin Balsam, Richard Benjamin, Olimpia Carlisi, Art Garfunkel, Jack Gilford, Charles Grodin, Bob Newhart, Anthony Perkins, Paula Prentiss, Martin Sheen, Jon Voight, and Orson Welles.

Description: Heller, Joseph. Catch-22. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961. First edition, first printing. Octavo. In original blue cloth boards, stamped in white. In the original unclipped dust jacket. Presented with a new archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell. Presented is the first edition, first printing of Joseph Hellers Catch-22. Catch-22 was published by Simon and Schuster, in October of 1961. This book is presented in the original publishers blue cloth boards, titled and embossed in white, and the original, unclipped dust-jacket. The Simon and Schuster A Note to the Reader postcard is laid in. The book comes with a new, archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell. Catch-22 was Joseph Hellers first novel and his most acclaimed work. Set during World War II, the novel uses a unique, non-chronological third-person narration, mainly focusing on the life of a B-25 bombardier in the U.S. Army, Captain John Yossarian, and his attempts to avoid bombing runs. Both the title and plot device, Catch-22 refers to an Air Forces regulation which asserts that a man is considered insane if he willingly agrees to fly dangerous combat missions, but that if he makes the formal request to be relieved of such missions, the very act of making the request proves that he is sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved." By the end of the novel, the phrase is invoked as the explanation for many unreasonable restrictions. Catch-22 has since entered the English lexicon. Heller spent eight years writing "Catch-22," and used his own war experiences as inspiration for the novel. From 1942 to 1945, Heller served as a combat bombardier in the Twelfth Air Force and was stationed on the Island of Corsica. Upon publication, the book was not an immediate bestseller, but did elicit glowing reviews from some. Wildly original, brilliantly comic, brutally gruesome, it is a dazzling performance that will probably outrage nearly as many readers as it delights. In any case, it is one of the most startling first novels of the year and it may make its author famous (Orville Prescott, New York Times). It became a publishing sensation thanks to the 1962 paperback edition, which set record sales and benefitted from the national debate surrounding the Vietnam War. In the decades since, it has inspired a feature film, a miniseries, a 50-character stage play, and sold more than 10 million copies. Catch-22 was ranked as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century by the Modern Library and one of the 100 greatest novels of all time by The Observer. CONDITION: Very good condition. Octavo. In the publisher's original blue cloth boards, with white stamped lettering on a smooth spine. Top edge stained reddish orange, fore-edge untrimmed. Description: 220 x 150 mm. (8 5/8 x 5 3/4"). 443 pp. Publisher's blue cloth, white lettering on smooth spine. In the original illustrated dust jacket. Housed in a modern red morocco-backed clamshell box. Title page SIGNED BY HELLER in ink. âA pristine volume in a bright, pleasing dust jacket. (The jacket with one-inch tear to fold at front joint neatly repaired on verso, one other quite small closed tear to top of front panel, front cover lightly chafed, slight fraying at spine ends and minor wrinkling at bottom of back panel.). This is an excellent signed copy of Heller's modern classic on the absurdity of war, often hailed as one of the most important novels of the 20th century. Based on Heller's own first-hand experiences as a member of the U.S. Air Force in WWII, the story revolves around bombardier Captain John Yossarian and his desperate efforts to keep himself alive by avoiding bombing runs. As noted by Britannica, "The 'catch' in Catch-22 involves a mysterious Army Air Forces regulation which asserts that a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions but that if he makes the necessary formal request to be relieved of such missions, the very act of making the request proves that he is sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved." Although the story takes place during the Second World War, the novel is largely a commentary on the Cold War and McCarthyism, and its anti-war message especially resonated with young people coming of age during the Vietnam War era. Joseph Heller (1923-99) wrote several novels, short stories, and plays, but "Catch-22" remains his best-known work. This copy is especially desirable for its very attractive condition and the presence of the author's signature on the title page.

Joe Heller October, 2, 1961 McCall's." (With a 2-page letter of provenance.) Quoting from the letter of provenance provided by the previous owner: "As far as I know the October 2nd 1961 date is an early one for an inscription of the first printing of Catch-22. It is my understanding that 1961 was the last year Mr. Heller worked at McCalls Magazine as an advertising copywriter. The recipient of the book, Bob Taylor was president of Visualscope at the time of the books signing. Visualscope had been incorporated in 1955 and was an active player in producing TV commercials, spectaculars staged for sales meetings and public relations. Visualscope depended on free-lance writers, artists and filmmakers. Thats where Joe Heller came in. He and Bob Taylor liked each other a good deal, lunched often, and discussed the much needed scripts for Visualscope. Joe Heller is described as a "promotion executive" on the inside flap of the dust jacket for Catch-22, recalling his years with Visualscope and Bob Taylor. Mr. Taylor went on to enjoy a long and splendid association with Tiffanys where he became a valued member of the corporate sales staff. His memorial service in 1988 was attended by Joe Heller, Joan Rivers, Betty Furness and many of his colleagues and friends from Tiffanys and Vsiualscope." Price: US$15000.00 + shipping
Description: Beautifully inscribed first edition of this dark satire on the patriotic narrative of American triumph in World War II, with a brief accompanying letter from Heller. A supreme example of black comedy in 20th-century war fiction, CATCH-22 emphasizes the existential disillusionment of soldiers witnessing their companion's deaths: graveyard humor taken to the same extremes as warfare. CATCH-22 has gone on to become a modern classic, familiar even to those who haven't read it through its influence on our linguistic culture: "Many consider the novel to be the definitive statement of the modern antiwar position. The phrase 'Catch-22', symbolizing the absurdity of all institutional logic, has become a permanent part of our language" (NYPL). A wonderful example in exceptional condition, exhibiting little of the usual fading to the red of the jacket, with a warm and revealing inscription. Rare thus. 8.25'' x 5.25''. Original full blue cloth, spine lettered in white. In original unclipped ($5.95) blue and red pictorial dust jacket designed by Paul Bacon, with author photo by Seymour Linden on rear panel. Inscribed by Heller on the front endpaper: "To Patrick, Christopher, / Celia, / + / Greg Ross. / It is a pleasure / indeed to inscribe / this first edition / of one of my / favorite novels -- still [underlined] / after 28 years. / Joseph Heller / Feb, 1990 / E. Hampton, N.Y." Brief ALS from Heller on his letterhead and with original mailing envelope also included to same recipients, agreeing to sign book. Touch of fading to spine of jacket, trace wear here and there - close inspection only. Book has bookplate to front pastedown. Some very faint wear to cloth. Else remarkably bright, clean, and sharp.
