The story of misfit high-school girl, Carrie White, who gradually discovers that she has telekinetic powers. Repressed by a domineering, ultra-religious mother and tormented by her peers at school, her efforts to fit in lead to a dramatic confrontation during the senior prom. Carrie knew she should not use the terrifying power she possessed. But one night at her senior prom, Carrie was scorned and humiliated just one time too many, and in a fit of uncontrollable fury she turned her clandestine game into a weapon of horror and destruction. A modern classic, Carrie introduced a distinctive new voice in American fiction -- Stephen King. The story of misunderstood high school girl Carrie White, her extraordinary telekinetic powers, and her violent rampage of revenge, remains one of the most barrier-breaking and shocking novels of all time. Make a date with terror and live the nightmare that is.Carrie.

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First printing of Stephen King's first book. First Edition stated on copyright page, with P6 code printed in the gutter of p. 199 of the text indicating the first state. A great copy, which I will try to describe thoroughly to prospective buyers. This is a bright and square copy in maroon cloth that has a few minor spots of rubbing/soil remnants, perhaps as if the book was handled a bit outside of the jacket. The book seems too tight to have been read. The gilt titling to the spine is bright, with a few small rubbed imperfections in "Carrie". Light rubbing to cloth at bottom of boards, but not nearly worn through. Rear paste-down has a small, 5mm defect at the corner, where it is torn but still pasted down. Original, price-clipped dust jacket is bright with some edgewear, crinkling at lower front flap fold, with a piece of scotch tape also having been applied to the inside of a 1cm closed tear at the lower flap fold. Small closed tear to rear lower flap fold, and general edgewear and softening with minor loss to paper at corners. A whitening crease line runs up the front flap fold. Some light apparent sunning to spine and a few other spots and imperfections to the jacket panels, with toning inside it. Presents nicely overall, and now in new mylar dust jacket protector.

Carrie is an American horror novel and author Stephen King's first published novel, released on April 5, 1974, with an approximate first print-run of 30,000 copies.[1] It revolves around the eponymous Carrie, a shy high-school girl, who uses her newly discovered telekinetic powers to exact revenge on those who tease her. King has commented that he finds the work to be "raw" and "with a surprising power to hurt and horrify." It is one of the most frequently banned books in United States schools.[2] Much of the book is written in an epistolary structure, through newspaper clippings, magazine articles, letters, and excerpts from books. Several adaptations of Carrie have been released, including a 1976 feature film, a 1988 Broadway musical, a 1999 feature film sequel, a 2002 television movie and a new theatrical adaptation of the novel released in 2013.

Carrie inaugurated King’s reign as “the best-selling American author during the final quarter of the 20th century” (Chronology of American Literature). When King began writing the book, however, he was living in a trailer and working at a laundromat for $60 a week. “Two unrelated ideas, adolescent cruelty and telekinesis, came together… I did three single-spaced pages of a first draft, then crumpled them up in disgust and threw them away… [The next night, my wife] Tabby had the pages… ‘You’ve got something here,’ she said. ‘I really think you do” (King, On Writing, 67-68). Tabitha King was right. “Life in the trailer ended in 1973 when Doubleday bought Carrie for a $2500 advance. Hardcover sales were not spectacular, but the paperback sales-boosted by the [1976] film of the novel-were nearly 4,000,000 copies. ‘The movie made the book, and the book made me,’ King says” (New York Times).
