PEAKE, Mervyn.. Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor.. London Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1945.

Price: US$332.75 + shipping

Description: Second edition; large 8vo; publishers yellow cloth, lettering to upper board in green; pictorial dust-jacket; a superb copy. The 1939 Country Life printing of this book (the first edition), was almost completely lost due to 'enemy action' during the war and is now an almost mythic rarity. For this the revised edition Peake added colour to the illustrations with the paper also printed a variety of different colours. Truly notable not only for Peake's poetic writing style but also that of his fine illustrations, Captain Slaughterboard (a brilliant name!) tells the story of the titular captain and his raggedy crew aboard their ship The Black Tiger.

Peake, Mervyn. Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor (SIGNED). Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1945.

Price: US$395.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Peake's first book -- the 1945 is actually the second edition, with color screens added to the internal pages, as most copies of the 1939 true first were reported "destroyed by enemy action early in the war." Large, slim octavo hand-signed to the blank FFE "Mervyn Peake '47." This copy acquired from the Old Aberdeen Bookshop, Aberdeen, whose proprietor informs us "The signature is genuine according to the lady who sold this book. Given to her mother by the author in Sark, Channel Islands, UK." And indeed, the distinctive autograph signature matches others available Online. None of the usual warping to the boards, here, though there's also no dust jacket, alas. Charming if somewhat odd pirate fantasy. (Actual relationship of the pirate captain and the Yellow Creature remains unclear, and thus possibly non-traditional.) Reduced from $1,200.

Description: 7 1/2" x 10". Second Edition (very few actual Firsts of 1939 survived a bombing and fire in WWII). Full-page color illustrations throughout by author Mervyn Peake, in a darkly whimsical style bordering on the absurd. A children's tale of pirate adventures. This copy is at least Very Good Plus: tan boards with only the slightest bumping to the spine ends and almost imperceptible discolorations here and there; bottom of back board has some faint spots darker than the cloth's color; both boards have very slight bowing outwards from the middle vertically (so that boards are a bit closer together at the ends when viewed from top or bottom; boards are thin, large and very hard). Internally nice without any writing, marks or signs of use except for fingernail scoring in one spot on the leading edge of the first few pages; free endpapers are slightly wavy. Dustjacket in great condition as well with slight bumping at the spine ends, a bit of curling at the top edges, a small (1cm +) light brown splat (series of tiny dots) at the upper edge, and price is clipped inside front flap; otherwise Fine with bright yellow and black illustrations [see photo; other scans/photos available upon request]. A very nice copy of this rare children's book.
