Description: Hardcover, no dust jacket. Green cloth over boards with gold embossed floral decoration and lettering. Dated 1896 on copyright and title page. 208 pages. A two volume set- this is volume II only. Good condition. Binding is strong and square. Covers are toned, with some heavier sunning to the spine. No bumps or rubbing. Pages clean. Page edges lightly toned. Endpapers have a bit more toning. Front free endpaper has a gift inscription from 1899 and a previous bookseller's pencilled note. No other marks or writing to be found. Half-title page is loose. Still attached at the very foot of the page, but mostly detached. Gorgeous color illustrations throughout, sweetly printed on the page margins. Overall good condition. This example is in very good condition only with its flaws. 2 volumes, octavo, 7 1/2" tall, vol. 1: color frontispiece + vii + 173 pages; vol. 2: color frontispiece + 208 pages with index, gilt top fore-edges, titles and decorations on olive-green cloth. A very good, generally clean, neat original hardcover edition with minor shelf wear but cloth color faded at the spines; binding tight, paper lightly yellowed. Without dust jacket

Houghton, Mifflin, MCCC XCVI ( BAL 20192 ) The books are bound in covers designed by Sarah Wyman Whitman. Green cloth with title, author and floral design stamped in bright gilt on the front covers and stamped in blind on the back covers. Covers have fading and sun-toning on the spine and edges. Top edges bright untarnished gilt. The corners are sharp and the bindings are sound. Endpapers have a sprinkle of foxing and age-toning. Spine caps are bumped. For Vol.I there is a 1" loss of cloth at the head. The ribbon marker has left tanning in the gutters of p. 81 and 82. For Vol. II there is a .25" chip and missing cloth at the head . The ribbon marker is loose. A binding error has caused a small closed tear on the top edge of p 110 near where the ribbon had been placed. Tanning also on pp 110 and 111 in the gutters from the ribbon. name of previous owner in pencil on the ffe of VOlI along with small notation by a previous seller. Otherwise, the pages are ivoried, pristine, smooth and unmarked. A beautiful first edition set of Thoreau's classic rambles on the Cape, enhanced by the delicate watercolor sketches of Amelia Watson.
