Condition: Very Good

Description: Norman Mailer was a bestselling novelist who, in the turbulent 1950s and 1960s, became a journalist, biographer, actor and political activist, among his many roles. Along with Truman Capote and Tom Wolfe, Mailer was one of the early innovators of creative non-fiction, also known as new journalism, and probably did his best work in this area, winning two Pulitzer Prizes and a National Book Award. "Cannibals and Christians" is a collection of short writings from 1960 to 1966 on topics such as politics, poetry, literary criticism, and sex and society. First Printing, First Edition. About 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, 400 pages in dark-blue cloth-covered boards with gold and silver lettering on spine. Text includes a tipped-in frontispiece photo of a ten-foot model construction of about 20,000 pieces representing a city of the future with some 15,000 apartments for 50,000 people. The photo is also used in the design for the dustjacket's front panel, with yellow and white lettering. DJ's back panel shows six paragraphs describing the varied content of the book. The boards show only a touch of shelf wear; there is a penciled, brief gift inscription dated "xmas 1966" on the fep, o/w text is clean, complete and unmarked; binding is tight and square. No bumping, creasing, or tearing, not remaindered. The dj shows considerable edge wear, with a single 3/4 inch tear at the lower edge of the front panel and numerous tiny tears and chippings on corners, edges and spine ends. That said, it is about 97% whole and not price-clipped. Understanding Mailer and his times means understanding his non-fiction, including this collection from the 60s. [Due to the book's size and weight, priority/express orders or orders from outside the U.S. may require extra postage.]

Description: AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE ADVANCE COPY (likely prepared for the Publisher's in-house review and without any Table of Contents) consisting of what appear to be trimmed signatures (perhaps the final Galleys) bolted together and wearing what appears to be the final dust jacket. The book (which contains a collection of Mailer's journalistic and other pieces) shows some soiling and staining to the page block's top edge and some modest stain marking to the top margin of the first sixty (60) or so pages. The dust jacket shows wear holes above the bolts and some general tearing and wear as well as tide marking to the front panel. We never have seen another copy in this format and it certainly was printed ahead of any copies sent out for review. A RARE ADVANCE COPY. Bound Galleys in the Dust Jacket
