Description: Original brown cloth covers with gilt titles and a black cover design. A Good copy. Book has shelfwear, edgewar, severely bumped corners, soiling to covers and edges of text block, chipping to top and bottom of spine (small pieces missing), a tear to the cloth at the bottom of the spine (about an inch, signatures visible), a tear to the cloth at the top of the spine (about two inches), a cocked spine, toning to pages, a former owner's name on the front endpapers, a tight split at page 16, and a tight split at page 64. No jacket. Interior is otherwise clean and unmarked. 8vo. - over 7¾' in - 9¾' in.

These articles would be gathered into the author's title, CALIFORNIA FOR HEALTH, PLEASURE, AND RESIDENCE, which would be published by Harper & Brothers, 1873. Description: With previous owner's name, otherwise a VG hardcover, decorative green cloth binding with gold lettering and black stamping, no DJ. 255 pages, this is the first book edition, magazine articles before this. Map and 60 lovely illustrations. Photos on request. Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901) and his family came to America from Prussia when he was a boy and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. Winning a reputation as a journalist and writer on the sea, Nordhoff was managing editor of the New York Evening Post, 1861-1871. He spent 1872-1873 travelling to California and Hawaii, and returned east to become the Washington correspondent of the New York Herald. He continued to visit California frequently and spent his last years in Coronado.

Description: 255 pages in unmarked hardcover with NO jacket and loose spine. First 10 Gatherings sections are completely or partially broken from binding but all are still intact. Burgundy cloth boards with gilt titles on cover and spine with two additional black decorative borders at top and bottom front, spine and rear covers. Cloth on spine is split along more than halfway. Heavily worn and frayed at top and lower edges of spine. All board corners are bumped and exposing boards. Front endpapers have a bookplate and a penciled inscription dated 1873. Staining/soiling on title pages with stains decreasing in size through to page 43. Many B&W engraved illustrations, Appendix and adverts at the end.

FOLSOM of Kearny, New Jersey who also served as a Recording Secretary for the NJ Historical Society from 1904 until at least 1920. GREAT ASSOCIATION COPY Green decorative binding with gold print. Some minor cloth fading to front cover edges otherwise a clean, complete, and tight book.
