States on the front: HERE IS YOUR SURPRISE GIFT - the idea of which was the inspiration of Sir John Martin-Harvey ! - It is an entirely new Edition of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, specially prepared for children and illustrated by that brilliant artist, Gilbert Wilkinson. - The dustjacket had small nibbles to the top edge and these have been repaired to the rear with colour like paper. - Now housed in an archival sleeve for protection. - Blue cloth boards with gold/gilt lettering and decoration to the front board, lightly faded with few soil marks. Small cameo of Charles Dickens with gilt holly round the edge of the board. Boards are in a wonderful condition and are firmly attached to the page block. - The decorative end pages to the front and rear are lightly foxed and browned, and minimally throughout the 92 pages. Other than this, all pages are clean and tightly bound throughout. Description: 16mo. Pp. 4-118; 121-246. Vol. I frontis. author portrait engraving with tissue guard. Full red morocco, gilt decorations front and back, gilt titles in panels on the spines, gilt tops. Title and section initial caps in red. Chipboard slipcase covered in dark green paper. Colophon: "By special arrangement Linotype original Baskerville was used in this book for the first time. Printed on Worthy rag paper by William Edwin Rudge at Mt. Vernon, N. Y. December 1930. Typography and binding by Frederic Warde." Spines minimally soiled and ends rubbed. Case rubbed and scarred. A handsome set from master printer Rudge II (1876-1931) during his golden era with designers Warde and Bruce Rogers. This was the final title in his series of Christmas books first issued in 1920. The Linotype Baskerville revival was cut by George W. Jones in 1923.

Description: A very interesting copy of the 1930 re-issue by the Press of the Wooly Whale of New York. Re-bound in a full chocolate-brown leather, with bright git-titling along the spine and the W.A. Dwiggins-designed door-knocker from the title page gilded ono the front panel. Unsigned but possibly a one-of-a-kind or a Presentation binding by Melbert B. Cary, Jr. of the Press of the Woolly Whale. The book is well-preserved and VG+, with crisp, bright-white pages. Other than a small inscription on the front free endpaper, the book is clean as could be, with no writing or markings to speak of. The 5 initial chapter letters and the title page door-knocker are all designed in a rich red by the great W.A. Dwiggins. The leather binding is clean and VG+ to Near Fine, with just a touch of wear along its flap-folds. Folio, gilt top-edge, deckled fore and bottom edges. #207 of only 250 copies issued. This title represents "the first folio and first prose volume from the Press of the Woolly Whale"

Description: 10 in. x 13 7/8 in. Title page, printed in red and black, has a note regarding the W. A. Dwiggins door knocker. Introduction by Melbert B. Cary, Jr. [6] 1-[79] + numbered colophon bearing the number 48 inside of the Dwiggins door knocker design. Printed on Dutch Lutetia type of J. van Krimpen, and printed damp upon Tarazona paper. Marley’s door knocker and the five initial letters have been designed and drawn for this work by W. A. Dwiggins. Marginalia and initial letters printed in red. Vellum spine and sides with a red leather title label with gilt titling and a small gilt-embossed design on the front lower vellum side. Green cloth over boards. Top edge gilt. Other edges rough-cut. The leather title label shows some wear; small bumps to the lower cover corners, and light wear and rubbing to the cover corners, some age-related tanning to the rough cut fore-edge of the book. Vellum shows some age-related mellowing. Bookplate of James L. Thielman on the front inner paste-down. A near fine copy. Weight is 2.5 lbs.
