Description: Fifth book (& a Newberry Honor Winner, though not noted on this early edition) in the author's beloved "Little House" series, with the lovely original First Edition illustrations throughout by Helen Sewell & Mildred Boyle (later editions would use different illustrators), including a colorful frontispiece & pen-and-ink drawings in text, some full page plates. Orig. published in 1939, this is the 8th edition (c. Jan. 1946 per letter code). In 260 pages, this hardcover small 8vo (5.75" x 8.5") has light gray cloth-covered boards stamped with blue lettering to front & spine. Condition is VG-/G+: completely clean inside, pages creamy white & unmarked save for former owner's name stamp to recto of frontispiece. Light spotting to exterior boards & mild rubbing/bumping to extremities. The unclipped DJ (with orig. $2.00 price intact to front flap) is Good: colorful & complete with minor edgewear, but downgraded due to 2 holes to front cover-front flap interface; nicely protected against further damage in new clear mylar cover free! Description: Vintage reprint of this 1940 Newbery Honor book. One of the much-loved and honored Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Gray cloth with red ink illus and lettering to cover and spine. Softening to caps, light fraying to bottom front corner, and a few small dings to board edges. Interior very nice. Decorated endpapers (strawberries etc) in blue, pages seem clean with no handling marks, no dog-ears or other creases, feels very nice. The dust jacket has a little rubbing and wear but quite nice--see photos. Original $2.00 price intact on front flap. Jacket may be from an earlier copy as it resembles exactly that of a first printing, inlcuding price, all wording on flaps, etc.
