They were from the upper classes, well educated, and secure in their future. Shortly after their marriage. all of that blew away with the blitzkrieg. Laddy and Ada made their way to join the Polish forces, and ended the war in Italy, never to be able to return to their homeland. So they started a whole new life in Africa, Laddy following childhood dreams of being a great hunter. He became one of the great characters, and Ada besides assisting in the management of their safari firm, went out on hunts, polished her rudimentary English until she was writing poems (some of which are included) and developed an intense interest in the Masai people (she wrote a book about them).''
