Steinbeck, John. BURNING BRIGHT: A Play in Story Form. Viking Press, New York, 1950.

Price: US$80.00 + shipping

Description: First printing of Steinbeck's experimental work, an amalgam of play and novel similar to OF MICE AND MEN. Expanding on the idea first developed in OF MICE AND MEN - adapting aspects of the theater into the structure of a novel - Steinbeck wrote this "play in story form" about the birth of a long-awaited child. The book was staged the same year with Rodgers and Hammerstein as producers. Neither the book nor the play did well, but Steinbeck didn't seem to mind: "We were kicked around like dogs, but I still want to do it. This shows a truly pure quality of stupidity. Just nuts. I'm so fascinated by everything about the theatre I don't really care if the show's a flop" (Interview, NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW, 18 September 1952). 7.5'' x 4.75''. Original full tan cloth, front board and spine lettered in red. Original unclipped ($2.50) dust jacket in yellow, grey, and orange. Orange topstain. 159, [1] pages. Ink owner inscription to front fly leaf. Jacket moderately edge worn with areas of paper loss to upper front corner and at spine ends. Lines of creasing at spine. Cloth lightly worn, rounded at corners. Offsetting to endpaper gutters.

Condition: Fine

Description: 159 p. 20 cm. Tan cloth in mylar-covered dustjacket. Top edge pink. Panels a bit rubbed, light edge wear, front flap price clipped. As this book's subtitle explains, Steinbeck wrote it as an experiment with producing a play in novel format. Rather than providing only the dialogue and brief stage directions, as would be expected in a play, Steinbeck fleshes out the scenes with details of both the characters and the environment. The experiment had already been carried out successfully in "Of Mice and Men" and "The Moon Is Down."

Description: The first edition of this novel from Pulitzer winner John Steinbeck. First edition, first printing. 'Burning Bright' was written as an experiment with producing a play in novel format. Rather than providing only the dialogue and brief stage directions as would be expected in a play, Steinbeck fleshes out the scenes with details of both the characters and the environment. The intention was to allow the play to be read by the non-theatrical reader while still allowing the dialogue to be lifted and performed with little adaptation by acting companies. In a grey cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, generally smart, with just some slight shelfwear. Dustwrapper is sound, though with some edgewear and handling marks. Internally, firmly bound. Ink signature to front free-endpaper. Pages are generally bright and clean, aside from a few patches of foxing. Very Good

Description: New York: The Viking Press, 1950. 159 pp. Approximately 5 x 7 1/2". First edition, first printing. Dust jacket is very good with minor chips and wear and does have the $2.50 price on flap, small closed tear on front top edge of cover. Original tan cloth over boards, red lettering on cover and spine, orange dye on top edges, bookseller's ticket on rear paste-down endpaper, very minor foxing to edges, otherwise in near fine condition. (Goldstone & Payne, A29a)The form of this book is a "play-novelette", which is a play that is easy to read or a short novel that can be played. Steinbeck used this method experimentally in "Of Mice and Men" and "The Moon is Down" but this book is a more complete attempt at this form. While this book was not critically acclaimed, Steinbeck, as always, is a very vivid writer and bring his four characters to life in this play concerned with the timeless themes of love, jealousy, friendship, and the desire to have a child

Description: First edition. 8vo, full grey cloth lettered in red on upper cover and spine, in dustjacket. 159. A bright clean and unusually nice copy. In the Foreword Steinbeck writes his reasons for writing in this format - play-novellette: "I find it difficult to read plays, and in this I do not find myself alone. The printed play is read almost exclusively by people closely associated with the theater, by students of the theater, and by the comparatively small group of readers who are passionately fond of the theater. .[this] will be more widely read because it is presented as ordinary fiction."
