He saw action again in the First World War as Commander of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, leading the landings on the peninsula and then the evacuation later in the year, before becoming commander-in-chief of the Fifth Army on the Western Front during the closing stages of the war. Description: An uncommon first thus edition copy of this work by Robert Smith Surtees, copiously illustrated throughout and signed by the renowned British artist George Denholm Armour. This edition was limited to three hundred and fifty copies, numbered and signed by the artist. This copy is numbered 'No. 198', and signed by Armour to the colophon. Collated, complete with twenty five tipped in coloured plates by Armour, and several black and white illustrations throughout the text. Robert Smith Surtees was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer best known for his contributions to the first English sporting periodical to devote itself to every type of sport, 'The Sporting Magazine'. Surtees launched his own sporting magazine entitled the 'New Sporting Magazine' in 1831, contributing the comic papers which appeared as 'Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities' in 1838. Jorrocks, the eponymous, vulgar and artful sporting cockney grocer was a great success with the public and is often considered as one of the great comic characters of English Literature, appearing in many of Surtees works such as this text, 'Hunts with Jorrocks'. Featuring a tipped in bookplate of a 'John Hicks Graves, of Bradenham'. In the publisher's original full leather binding, with gilt and blind stamped detail to the front board. Externally, slight rubbing to extremities and head and tail of spine, resulting in slight loss to leather. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Ink inscription by artist to limited edition colophon. Internally firmly bound. Pages rough cut to extremities, but bright and clean. The odd light spot to the occasional page. Can command up to £500 but slightly worn here and priced accordingly. This work contains an extensive number of biographies, with portraits, of eminent British sportsmen. With a presentation label from the Turf Club, presented by Lt-Colonel James S. Forbes, July 1949. The first British newspaper entitled The Sportsman began publishing from 1865, some six years after the Sporting Life. It ran until 1924. Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. The bindings are generally tight and firm. The hinges are starting, and the inner hinges are strained. Several plates from each volume, and pages 221 and 323 of volume 2 ,are detached. There is significant wear to the extremities, including significant bumping, rubbing, and discolouration. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, with slight browning to the page edges, and scattered spotting. She had one daughter, the novelist Bradda Field. She first married a Mr. Herbert and became a widow some time later. In 1913, she married Archibald Thomas Stewart, a commander in the Royal Navy. Herbert was a member of the Society of Women Journalists, also serving as its vice-chair and later vice-president. She was editor of the Writers' & Artists' Yearbook from 1922 to 1929. In 1931, Herbert was named an officer of the Order of the British Empire.

George Francis Scott Elliot [1862-1934] was a botanist, author, and Fellow at Royal Society of Edinburgh. He wrote extensively on Botany and Natural History, and published two other books under The Library of Romance Series. The Romance of Plant Life (1907) and the Romance of Early British Life (1909).

Uniform light fading to the spine strips with a little occasional scattered light soiling. . Neat pencil name inscription to the reverse of the front end paper. All edges gilt. The South-West of England - 591pp. There is some rubbing to the spine strip edges and a little loss to the leather covering in places. Small bore hole to the spine strip near the tail with a little associated soiling. A litlte creasing to the front edge of the preliminary blank page and a little light finger soiling to the page margins. A couple of printers creases to the tissue guard of the frontispeice plate. The South - East, East, and Eastern Midlands of England - 606pp; A little rubbing to the edges of the spine strip, bands and board corners. There is a short tear to the cloth of the front board, now repaired. A little scattered foxing to the reverse of the illustration plates. England ( North), Scotland, and Ireland has more marked rubbing to the spine strip edge, bands and to the head and tail of the spine. A little rubbing to the board corners, including a little loss of the leather covering to one side of the spine adjacent to the letter 'E' in Engalnd embossed on the spine. A little soiling to the front fore edges. One illustration plates, that should be opposite pp343 has beedn misplaced opposite pp348 - but all are present. The North-East, and Western Midlands of England; and Wales - 664pp. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, spine edges and corners. A little fraying of the cloth of the front board, adjacent to the spine strip for 2.5 cm. Split of 1 cm to the front inner hinge. A couple of pages are slightly creases along the front fore edges where they stand very slightly proud to the rest of the textblock. All textblock of all volumes remains tightly bound and clean. A lovely copy of this complete set.

An annotation to on image reads 'I served my time in this shop as a fitter & turner Aug. 1946-Aug. 1951'.Images depict the turning and drilling bays, the frame building bays, the general machining section, carriage fitting benches, and the underframe fitting bay within the Swindon Works, the principal Great Western Railway maintenance centre between 1843 and 1986.Illustrated with eighty photographs mounted on eighty-eight leaves, and with seven further loosely inserted photographs.The earliest photographs present include a depiction of the 'royal train at West London for Funeral of King Edward VII 20th May 1910', and a 1908 image of the Royal Train at Badminton.Trains photographed include the Caerphilly Castle at Swindon works, and there are images of trains at Bulls Bridge, Hayes, and of the auto train for Staines at the Colmbrook Station in 1954.Images also depict a JCB digging and laying tracks, and the interior of the Swindon Great Western Railway works.A number of these images are accompanied by captions, while some photographs bear the stamp of the British Railways (Western Region) Chief Engineer's Office Photographing Dept. to the reverse.Loosely inserted is a 1957 leaflet advertising a 'New Diesel Express Service' running between Birmingham, Cardiff and Swansea.A truly fascinating collection of photographs depicting the development of the Great Western Railway over the course of the first half of the twentieth century.
