David Butcher. British Private Press Prospectuses. Whittington Press, Risbury, Herefordshire, 2001.

Price: US$1539.21 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: 29x21cm, 147pp. With sixteen plates and further tipped-in original and reproduction prospectuses, plus a pocket inside the rear cover containing three complete facsimile prospectuses from the Kelmscott, Doves and Nonesuch Presses. Copy x of 40 (350), bound in full salmon-pink Oasis leather, orange marbled endpapers, gilt title to spine, with a separate portfolio of thirty original prospectuses in a folder quarter-bound in gold buckram over brown paper-covered boards, all in a gold buckram-covered drop-back box with orange leather panel to the spine and gilt title. A comprehensive survey of the subject, essential for the British Private Press enthusiast, with generous illustrations, tipped-in reproductions, specimens etc. and a bibliography of detailed prospectus listings for specific Presses. However, the book is transformed to another level in its special editions by the presence of original prospectuses spanning virtually the whole history of the British Private Press movement. For Edition A, as here, there is a cornucopia of original and sometimes very desirable Private Press prospectuses in the portfolio: highlights from this copy (the contents varied slightly due to limited availability) include the Nonesuch Press catalogue (a lovely slim hardback) for 1925/6, a Vale Press announcement for 'Hand and Soul', a Doves Press announcement (1913), the Golden Cockerel catalogue of Autumn 1936 with five inserted loose prospectuses, the large Gregynog Eros and Psyche prospectus (1935) and many others. The task of acquiring such material in bulk, even in the relatively small quantities needed for the Edition A limitation, must have been considerable. For those lucky enough to have an Edition A copy of David Butcher’s Pages from Presses I, and perhaps a matching Pages of Presses II on order from Pat Randle, this is a scarce opportunity to complete the trio of the best general survey of the Private Presses since Cave and Franklin (in our opinion) in the finest possible style, not to mention as-new condition. Fine, with Fine portfolio (a small number of the older prospectuses in the portfolio have some light foxing appropriate to their age, as issued), in a Fine drop-back box.
