GREENE, Graham (1904-1991). Brighton Rock. London: William Heinemann, 1938, 1938.

Price: US$1274.04 + shipping

Description: [Modern Literature] FIRST EDITION, production-used copy of Linnit and Dunfee. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.[4]; 361; [1]. Publisher's red cloth lettered in gilt to spine. Linnit and Dunfee ownership stamp to flyleaf. Previous owner's name in black ink to flyleaf and dated 1940, toning to end-papers and edges of textblock, pen mark to bottom of textblock, warping to boards, publisher's cloth worn exposing boards underneath at corners. Sticker mark to front board, rolling to spine. Good. The book tells the chilling tale of teenage mob-leader Pinkie, and it is masterpiece of psycho-realism. This copy belonged to Linnit and Dunfee who were theatrical agents and producers. They staged a production of Brighton Rock in UK theatres during 1943. It was performed at Garrick Theatre in London (March-June), Grand Theatre in Blackpool (February), Bristol Hippodrome (February), and New Theatre in Oxford (March). This stage production starred Richard Attenborough, William Hartnell (who later starred as the first incarnation of Dr Who), and Hermione Baddeley. All of these actors later went on to reprise their roles in the 1947 Boulting Bros film adaptation of Brighton Rock.

Description: Brighton Rock, Graham Greene, William Heinemann Limited, 1938, First Edition, First Impression with facsimile Dust Jacket One of the most sought after novels of the twentieth century. Adapted for film in 1947 and 2010, this is a murder thriller set in 1930s Brighton. The title refers to a confectionary traditionally sold at seaside resorts with the name of the resort embedded in the centre and elongated down the length so the name of the resort is shown wherever the stick is broken. A First Edition, First Impression in good condition. The binding is straight if ever so slightly loose to the front boards, the boards a little darkened with age but retain their colour and the lettering on the spine is bright. There are two small tears to the top edge of the spine, wear to the bottom edge of the spine and front board and wear to all the corners. The toned end papers and pages are free from marks and tears. and remnants of a removed sticker and one small date stamp to the rear of the inside board. Neat owner's name and date to the rear of the front board and remnants of a removed sticker and one small date stamp to the rear of the inside board, both covered by the return flaps of the fabulous new replica dust jacket. As a first edition first impression this book is becoming increasingly rare to find and with an original jacket, of which there are very few, sells for in excess of £60,000. Here is an opportunity to buy a first/first with a facsimile dust jacket at a fraction of that price. Would make an impressive addition to a library or a fabulous gift. Will be dispatched, fully insured carefully wrapped in bubblewrap and in a cardboard box.

Graham Greene. Brighton Rock. William Heinemann, 1938.

Price: US$23000.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: "Brighton Rock" by Graham Greene. William Heinemann, London. 1938 first UK edition first printing. Book in very good condition, publisher's review slip loosely inserted, a few scattered spots to edges, original cloth, spotting to spine, otherwise excellent. Comes with the very rare original second issue dust jacket, with reviews from Sean O'Faolain, John Brophy, James Agate and others, to flaps and lower panel, 4/6 price sticker to front flap, light toning to spine, neat repairs and restorations to extremities, in effect an excellent example, preserved in custom lidded box. The novel is a murder thriller set in 1930s Brighton. The title refers to a confectionery traditionally sold at seaside resorts with the name of the resort embedded in the centre and elongated down the length (so the same name is revealed wherever the stick is broken), which in the novel is used as a metaphor for the personality of Pinkie, which is the same all the way through. There are links between this novel and Greene's earlier novel A Gun for Sale (1936), because Raven's murder of the gang boss Kite, mentioned in A Gun For Sale, allows Pinkie to take over his gang and thus sets the events of Brighton Rock in motion. Graham Greene's masterpiece in the elusive dust jacket.
