Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, fifteenth printing. Very Good without a dustjacket. Light brown hardcover binding with green decoration and black titles, decorated brown endpapers showing map of Ecuador and Peru and three sailing ships. Illustrated by Amy Drevenstedt. Black and white highly stylized frontispiece. 9 additional full-page plates. Thick paper. 235 pp. This book won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1928. Scarce in dustjacket. The basis for the 1929 film starring Ernest Torrence, Raquel Torres, Henry Walthall, Michael Vavitch, Emily Fitzroy, and Jane Winton, directed by Charles J. Brabin, and the 1944 film staring Lynn Bari, Akim Tamiroff, Francis Lederer, Alla Nazimova, Louis Calhern, and Blanche Yurka, directed by Rowland V. Lee. A tiny footbridge breaks, hurtling five people to their deaths in eighteenth-century Peru. Brother Juniper, who witnesses their deaths, searches for meaning. Considered one of the great short novels of the twentieth century. Spine darkened and bumped, bottom slightly frayed. Several signatures weak with spine showing, apparently a common problem with this book. Includes new FACSIMILE dust jacket. Very good in new dust jacket, protected with an archival-quality mylar cover.

Wilder, Thornton. THE CABALA; By Thornton Niven Wilder. Albert & Charles Boni, New York, 1928.

Price: US$95.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: SIGNED by the Author on the half title, 8vo, gray cloth with black lettering and black stamped delineation of St. Peter's basilica on front cover, archival mylar-protected pictorial dust jacket (unclipped) with stylized (woodblock?) depiction of St. Peter's & bridge, publisher's gray page tops, 230 pages. Thornton Niven Wilder (1897 - 1975) was an American playwright and prominent novelist. He won three Pulitzer Prizes-for the novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1927), and for the plays Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth - plus a U.S. National Book Award for the novel The Eighth Day. Author's debut novel, THE CABALA, was first published in 1926. Though this is a later printing, to have the author's SIGNATURE in his first novel is Very Special. Also, given its early date, to have so bright, clean, and nearly complete a pictorial dust jacket is remarkable. The dj has some wear and light soil plus chipping mainly along its spine.
