Price: US$112.20 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: 12mo (large). First American book club edition (true 1st American). Parts of this novel appeared in abbreviated form in Town and Country. Full red cloth, black stamped lettering to spine and title and device to front board. 351 pp. Bumping to spine ends and tail edge of front board, very small spots of wear to lower corners, damp stain to foot of front joint. Dust jacket chippted to corners and spine ends, damp stained at foot of front cover, small perforations to front joint and rear flap, 2 inch tear to front flap, 3/4 inch tear to front joint at foot, some light creasing and wear. Briefly, here is the story of the rich, the beautiful, and the damned Marchmains, as told by Captain Charles Ryder, who revisited their home, Brideshead, in the war years. It is the story of the exquisite, appealing Sebastian who drank to escape bondage to his ascetic mother; of Julia who defied church and family by her marriage; and of Ryder himself, drawn irresistably within the vortex of this extraordinary family. It is a story of the strain that faith may put on the different temperaments, of how thin its thread may be for some, and of how strong it is in the lives of others.

Waugh, Evelyn. BRIDESHEAD REVISITED. Little Brown & Co., Boston, 1945.

Price: US$190.50 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Waugh's signature work -- the story of the rich and damned Marchmain family as told by Captain Charles Ryder, revisiting the family's home, Brideshead, during the war years. It is a story of the stress that religious faith can put on different personalities within a family as it confronts love and divorce. After publication in England in 1945, the first edition published in the U.S. was Little Brown's Bookclub edition, also in 1945. The Little Brown trade edition was not issued until 1946, resulting in the unusual occurence of the bookclub edition being the true first U.S. edition. This copy, in red cloth-covered boards with black lettering, shows only lighlty-bumped upper corner and spine ends and slightly soiled text edges, o/w clean and unmarked, tight and square. The dustjacket, with a brown spine and front panel and a cream back panel containing "critical comments" from five earlier Waugh novels taken from an Edmund Wilson "New Yorker" article, shows wear at the corners and spine ends with a one-inch tear and chipping at the top of the spine, chipping at the upper corners and tiny tears and creasing along the bottom edge. The dj's back panel is somewhat soiled. That said, the dj is 98% whole with no missing design or printed matter. Overall, this is a collectable copy of the true First American edition of what many consider Waugh's master work.

The true first American edition. 351pp. The novel has been twice adapted to the screen, first as an 11 episode miniseries produced by the BBC in 1981 (starring Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews, Diana Quick, Phoebe Nicholls, Simon Jones, Claire Bloom, John Gielgud, Charles Keating, Laurence Olivier and others), and again, somewhat less successfully, in 2008 as a feature film (starring Matthew Goode, Ben Whishaw, Hayley Atwell, Emma Thompson and others). Waugh's most famous work, and perhaps his most personal, a narrative which presents his ironic religious view of life; written during the War, under a mood of depression and nostalgia. Q05439

Description: contemporary full red cloth over boards, title in black ink on flat spine and the upper board., Brideshead Revisited, The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder is a novel by English writer Evelyn Waugh, first published in 1945. It follows, from the 1920s to the early 1940s, the life and romances of the protagonist Charles Ryder, most especially his friendship with the Flytes, a family of wealthy English Catholics who live in a palatial mansion called Brideshead Castle. Ryder has relationships with two of the Flytes: Sebastian and Julia. The novel explores themes including nostalgia for the age of English aristocracy, Catholicism, and the nearly overt homosexuality of Sebastian Flyte's eccentric friends at Oxford University. A faithful and well-received television adaptation of the novel was produced in an 11-part miniseries by Granada Television in 1981.Arthur Evelyn St. John Waugh (1903?1966) was an English writer of novels, biographies, and travel books; he was also a prolific journalist and book reviewer. His most famous works include the early satires Decline and Fall (1928) and A Handful of Dust (1934), the novel Brideshead Revisited (1945), and the Second World War Trilogy Sword of Honour (1952?1961). He is recognised as one of the great prose stylists of the English language in the 20th century. , Size : 8vo.,

The novel speaks of a world forever changed by war, tells an extraordinary love story and vividly depicts the conflicts between traditional religion and modern life. It is the first of Waugh's "Catholic Novels" and is now a classic. Both Time Magazine and Modern Library rank it as one of the top 100 novels of the century and it was the basis for what is still one of the most popular television miniseries of all time.
