Abbey, Edward. The Brave Cowboy: An Old Tale in a New Time. Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1957.

Price: US$375.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: 276pp. Duodecimo [19 cm] Green cloth-effect paper over boards with the title gilt stamped on the backstrip. The rear board is just a trifle warped, and the bottom edge of the text block is foxed. There is a little foxing on the endpapers as well. The dust jacket is foxing (heavily on the verso). There are a couple of small closed tears in the edges, and the rear inside flap is creased. Despite these flaws, the jacket is still relatively attractive. Second published work from the literary icon. The story of Jack Burns and his fight with modern society (a theme Abbey would revisit). The character of Jack Burns would turn up in later Abbey novels- Monkey Wrench Gang, Good News and Hayduke Lives! Basis for the film starring Kirk Douglas titled "Lonely are the Brave."

ABBEY EDWARD. THE BRAVE COWBOY. Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 1957.

Price: US$801.73 + shipping

Description: First UK Edition. Publisher’s original green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Foxing to the page edges otherwise a VG+ copy in like D/W with some foxing to the edges of both flaps and also to the left hand edge of the back panel. The basis for the 1962 classic film, ‘Lonely are the Brave’ starring Kirk Douglas and written for the screen by Dalton Trumbo. The story of John W. "Jack" Burns, who refuses to join modern society, doesn't have much use for modern technology, identification, or registering for the draft. The UK first edition had a much smaller print run than its US counterpart and has striking artwork (by Stein) of the cowboy on his rearing horse as a menacing truck aproaches. A very nice copy indeed
