They are the oracles of milkmaids and simple serving girls; and sometimes have even the honour of perusing the white hands of gentlemen's daughters, when rambling about their father's grounds. They are the bane of good housewives and thrifty farmers, and odious in the eyes of country justices; but, like all other vagabond beings, they have something to commend them to the fancy. They are among the last traces, in these matter-of-fact days, of the motley population of former times; and are whimsically associated in my mind with fairies and witches, Robin Good Fellow, Robin Hood, and the other fantastical personages of poetry.' (Gipsies, Pages 43-44 Volume II). ***The novel is a location-based series of character sketches, with a number of individual plots. Price: US$175.00 + shipping

Description: First printing Both volumes of this two volume set are in very good+ condition in recently rebacked 3/4 leather and green, pebbled cloth covered boards with four raised bands on the spine with the original gilt on red leather title labels in the compartments. The edges of the text blocks are speckled. Both volumes are small octavos measuring 8" tall by 5" deep. Both volumes have an early prior owner's book plate on the front paste downs and there is offsetting from the overlaid leather onto the end sheets. Minor foxing and tanning exists in the pages of the text blocks. Volume I contains 393 pages of text and volume II contains 403 pages of text. The points existing on leaf 93-94 of volume I and pages 403 and 404 indicate that this is the first state of the first edition of this title. Although the English edition appeared two days after the American edition was released the English edition contains a number of alternations to the text made by Irving which do not appear in the American edition. As a result the British first edition is considerably different from the American first. (Langfeld/Blackburn p. 24; and, BAL 10110) A very attractive and clean set.

Description: In two volumes. While the English edition was in press, Irving made numerous alterations and its text therefore differs widely from the American edition. The English edition appeared two days after the American edition. This is the third state: Vol. I: no cancelled leaf; the imprint on p. [ii] has "Davison" correctly instead of "Davsion" as previously. Vol. II: the text ends on p. 404, 21 lines having been added on p. 402-403. The imprint is on the bottom of p. 404. (Blanck calls the second and third state a "second edition" because of the added text, but adds that "it is entirely possible that the addition was done during the course of printing." Ref.: Langfeld, pg. 24; Blanck 10110. Corners, edges and paper sides worn, leather spines in very good condition. For the most part, text is clean and bright.
