Description: Boyhood Photos of J.-H. Lartigue: The Family Album of a Gilded Age; Ami Guichard Publisher and Edita S. A. Lausanne, Switzerland, 1966. The printing, engraving, and binding were all done in Lausanne and the volume has actual black and white photos of various sizes tipped in on heavy stock paper. Jacques Henri Lartigue (1894 – 1986) was a French photographer and painter, known for his photographs of automobile races, planes and female Parisian fashion models, very much the focus of the photos in this album. Born in Courbevoie in western Paris to a wealthy family, Lartigue started taking photographs when he was seven. He photographed his friends and family at play – running and jumping; racing home-built race cars; making kites, gliders as well as aeroplanes; and climbing the Eiffel Tower. He was one of the first artists to use the Kodak Brownie camera for snapshots. He also photographed sport events, such as the Coupe Gordon Bennett and the French Grand Prix, early flights of aviation pioneers such as Gabriel Voisin, Louis Blériot, Hubert Latham, Louis Paulhan and Roland Garros. He also captured in his camera, tennis players such as Suzanne Lenglen at the French Open tennis championships. Many of his initial, famous photographs were originally captured in stereo, for example seen in Hidden Depths but he also produced a vast number of images in all formats and media including glass plates in various sizes, autochromes, and film. He developed his own photographs from a young age. This large format book, 127 pages measuring 230mm X 290mm is in fine condition. A magnificent collection and production. This large volume will require additional postage.

Essay and captions by Jean Fondin from interviews with Lartigue. 128 pp., with 62 tipped-in black and white and sepia-toned reproductions on lightweight matte gray cover stock paper, printed in Switzerland by Imprimerie Centrale Lausanne. 9-1/4 x 12 inches. Near Fine (a few stray marks on the cover (visible only in raking light), very minor shelf wear and a 1/4-inch closed tear at the heel of the spine, faint stain on upper text block, else a near mint copy). Designed to mimic Lartigue's own photo scrapbook, this book contains snapshot-sized reproductions of Lartigue's most beloved photographs, and many lesser-known gems. From the introduction: "Lartigue's pictures, along with his accompanying comments and recollections, represent a kind of family album which summons up not merely the fanciful life of the lavish and successful Lartigue family, but in some sense, the childhood of a century as well. He chronicles how he and his brother and cousins amused themselves on vacations at their country estate, in Paris, among the fashionable ladies and fantastic new devices (horseless carriages, flying machines) of the 1900s. Gradually, through his photographs and memories, a sense of the age begins to take shape, in all its unabashed frivolity, its excitement, its blessed feeling that peace is the natural condition of man and that prosperity (for those who have it, at least) must be enjoyed to the full.".
