Upton Sinclair. Boston. Albert & Charles Boni, New York, 1928.

Price: US$50.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Boston a novel by Upton Sinclair, volume one and two are in very good condition, unmarked except for a pencil notation ( 2 volumes) on the first free end paper. Books are square tight and solid, the lettering and blind stamp are bright and sharp. The spine lettering is slightly faded but quite readable. The spines are very slightly bumped and the extremities show modest wear. This set of books is the first and second printings before publication. The author decided tp write this book on August 22, 1927 upon learning of the deaths of Sacco and Vanzetti. " A ' contemporary historical novel' is an unusual art-form, and may call for explanation, So far as concerns the two individuals Nicola Sacco and Bartolmeo Vanzetti, this book is not fiction, but an effort at history; everything they are represented as doing they actually did". The book is historical fiction and in my shout out to Michener, Sinclair did the hard work of studying the facts and reviewing thousands of pages of testimony and evidence. Book is a very interesting and compelling story set in the early 20th century by an intrepid reporter. These volumes are quite collectible in their condition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall 2 1st Printing

Sinclair, Upton. Boston. Albert & Charles Boni, 1928.

Price: US$50.00 + shipping

Condition: Fair

Description: A "documentary novel" combining fictional characters with journalistic details about the case of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. Sinclair believed that their executions for anarchistic activities was "the most shocking crime that has been committed in American history since the assassination of Abraham Lincoln" and wrote the book as indictment of the American justice system. The complicated saga features a wealthy widow who leaves her accustomed milieu and learns, along with readers, about anarchism, pacificism, socialism, and free love. Contemporary reviewers lauded the book's artistry, but there were complaints from the political left that he didn't go far enough and from the right for obvious reasons. The two volume set is bound in green cloth, with title and illustration embossed on the front and spine. Spine is worn at edges and front and rear hinges are cracked in volume 1, while spine is cracked in the middle in volume 2. But pages are otherwise in good shape. Says "First and Second Printings before Publication."

Slip case has soiling and is fragile. A wealthy dowager confronts the brutality of the class system and fights for justice in this dramatic account of the Sacco and Vanzetti case. With the publication of The Jungle in 1906, Upton Sinclair became the literary conscience of America. Two decades later, he brought his singular artistry and steadfast commitment to the cause of social equality to bear on the case of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, two Italian anarchists accused of armed robbery and murder. Boston, a "documentary novel" published one year after Sacco and Vanzetti were executed, brilliantly combines fact and fiction to expose the toxic atmosphere of paranoia, prejudice, and greed in which the two men were tried. Recently widowed sixty-year-old Cornelia Thornwell abandons her Boston B. Source: Publisher Upton Sinclair was a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, activist, and politician whose novel The Jungle (1906) led to the passage of the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act.

Sinclair Upton. BOSTON. New York Albert and Charles Boni 1928, 1928.

Price: US$495.00 + shipping

Description: 2 volumes. First edition, "first and second printings before publication". With a CARD SIGNED BY SINCLAIR tipped in. 8vo, publisher’s original green cloth, the covers decorated in dark green and gilt with pictorial designs and typography, the spines lettered and decorated in dark green. x, 374; 375-756. A handsome and attractive set, the bindings in very good order, the corners showing only the very slightest bit of evidence of shelving, the text blocks are clean, tight and fresh. FINE FIRST EDITION WITH TIPPED IN CARD SIGNED BY SINCLAIR. Upton Sinclair was no quiet author. From beginning to end, the author covered a plethora of subjects more intently than any other modern Renaissance man, exposing one clandestine act after another, and in so doing, enraging organisations and institutions throughout the United States. During an age just before the HUAAC’s inquisitors were exposing and attacking Communist contingents and sympathisers, Sinclair decided to attack American capitalism. BOSTON is one of Sinclair's best known historical novels and is about the Sacco and Vanzetti case. It is a book which upset more than a few "proper Bostonians" and caused a great searching of the public soul. This first edition with signed card is a highlight of the author’s most controversial works.
